Opinions on Chevy Colorados?

Just starting to look at new to me trucks. I was looking at Tundras and Tacomas. When I entered Colorado into car gurus I can get 3 years newer and with lower mileage. Any opinions on this truck. Are they good or junk? Is the Toyota option worth the increased price?
2016 Colorado 13.5K miles $25k
2016 Tacoma 45k miles $26K
Of coarse I would like to be in for $0 but could go $25k on a good truck.
I am looking more towards $15K to $20K budget wise.

 

That 2016 Tacoma may be a problem. That was the first year of the third generation of the Tacoma’s and they had some problems. Do some research, I have a 2017 and love it.

I haven't heard of many issues with those years of Colorado's. What engine?

 

The biggest complaint I’ve heard about the Colorado’s is that the mpg is as low as a full half ton, but the capabilities like towing capacity aren’t nearly as good. I bought a Nissan Frontier and like it so far. The Tacoma’s also look really nice.

 

New they are going for what a full size goes for as well. The older tech 6 spd auto tranny certainly isn't helping mpg. While I like the direct injection power, without the additional port injection, there's going to be problems or extra maintenance to clean the intake.

I like Toyotas. Our 4runner has been awesome. I know a lot of happy tundra,and Sequoia, 4runner, and taco owners.

The Colorado does offer a diesel, if you can find one that isn't stupidly priced.

 

My opinion, tacos are great but seat is way too low. Here a 3 yo Toyota truck with 50k sells for 7 thousand less than new. Great that great IDK

MPG doesn't concern me a lot. I am retired and mileage driven will not be great. Eric VW's, friend Gary?? has a Frontier . I would consider one but havn't researched yet.

I don't know of anyone that has a Toyota having a bad word to say about them, that is the reason I am leaning towards the Toyota product.
Engine doesn't matter that much, but when I retired 5 years ago my millwright had a Colorado and like it. I believe his had a 5 cylinder engine that I thought was kind of weird. They were suppose to introduce the diesel option the next year. We were both looking at buying one. I didn't see they introduced the diesel the next year and the realization on retirement set in. New truck wasn't going to happen.

 

Just before Christmas, I ran into a friend I haven't seen in years. Also retired vet, he drives a Colorado with the z71 package (or whatever its called) and really likes it. Says its fast! Not a requirement in my book any longer but I guess he had to tell someone......

I looked at a Tacoma today. They sure get a good penny for them!

We have a Colorado 4x4 at work...hasn't caused any huge issues, but it seems like a "nickel and dime you to death" vehicle. Always some dumb little issue, idiot light on, heater speed control won't work, seat adjustment broke, etc, etc.
One of my coworkers has one too...I think his second one has been ok, but the first one puked a timing chain (5 cyl) and he sold it as-is because it was going to cost too much to fix...

 

For the price, I dont get the Colorado. Too much money for a mini truck.

But.. I don't think the Colorado is nearly worth what they want for one.

Further.. If I were inclined to go that route, I'd definitely head over to the GMC stable and look at the Canyon.

Same vehicle, but if the midsize line is equivalent to the full size line, more dependable.

Through past experience, I'd purchase GMC before Chevy any day.

I still wear my "Bowtie" hat though.

Check out Blue Knob Auto. They sell 1200 used cars a month and its all no-haggle.
Drive a car, take a number to do the paperwork.
Their pricing is good. The cars are current model year- 4 years old. With really low miles.

 

I have taken to using CarComplaints to research the best production years to buy a used vehicle. Sure, any one vehicle can have a problem even if that year is generally a good year, or any single vehicle can be very reliable even if that year was generally not a good year, but it is good to be aware of prevalent issues.

 

All makes and models have them...

The oem's want the cars/parts to last the warranty period...and not much more...
Then you'll need to buy another one...

 

And that right there folks is why after market warranties are available!

 

My Tacoma was flawless except for the rotted out frame which Toyota did replace for free. They also gave me a brand new loaner car Corolla SE for the 6 months it took to replace it.

 

There's the first gen Colorado/ canyon, and then there's the second gen. Two totally different vehicles really. I thought the first gen was a let down. I have a friend that had a couple of the first gen. Still has 1 of them too. The second generation are nearly the size of a full size truck, but have less towing/ hauling capabilities. There's 3 engine options on the newer version that went on sale as 2015 models in 2014.
