Heading out for more today after a brief respite yesterday. The lifting cable for the mowing deck sheared a cotter pin a couple days ago......gotta fix that. Don't need it to move firewood, but after the rain, the grass has gone a little crazy. A small piece of the cotter pin is stuck in the hole on the attaching pin, so I may need to do some dis-assembly to get to it. Well, no dis-assembly required. Got the cable reattached and cut most of the lawn, then got the rest of the small Oak brought up. I might even get to some of the larger Oak today. Well, I did it again. Typed this up Thursday afternoon, but didn't hit the post button......DOH!
That load of skinny splits didn't quite fill the row, so I did 2 more loads. One to finish filling it, then another to start the next row. Larger splits.
My grass is getting so long I gotta call it hay now, in one area that just won't dry. Not into it anyway... Got some sorta allergy hapnin, coughin up frog ponds... Wood's lookin mighty cozy in there.
The push mower needs a new blade, and now the GT PTO is acting up. Cuts out sometimes while I'm mowing. It's always something. The wood will now STAY dry until needed. It gets a little toasty in there this time of year too.
Doesn't help much with the bending but I find the rubber coated Japanese gloves make tossing around wood much easier. The textured rubber really grips the wood so you don't have to use as much hand strength to get a good grip. Plus they last a long time and are cheap.
Dave, more garden work, and I'll make a run to the woods for some Oak and to see how many ticks I pick up. If not bad, I'll go back. I only have '14-15, and '15-16 wood and about 1/3 cord of Oak for '16-17. I was thinking the 30 would use less wood, but now I'm not sure. Still need to fix the Jeep, and that may get farmed out, I need to build some more raised beds, and I need to stay on top of the garden weeds. The list is way too long, but those are at the top. The shed should be as full as it's going to be by tomorrow with the last of the Oak. Should be just about 5&2/3 cord. Hoping to use between 4-5.
Yea The list of chores grows when you retire. Nice thing is I can put stuff off for a day of golf, work for me on my schedule now. Wish I was a nicer boss ! Slave driver LOL
This last batch of Oak is actually getting bit punky. It's the last of the last log load I got that I finished processing in the fall of '11. So, I'm thinking if I cut nothing but standing dead or down stuff, I won't have a problem burning it in 2 years. So, I could cut some as the summer goes on, then get real busy this fall/early winter and still be fine. I plan to split some of the dead Oak I cut in May to see where it's at. That'll tell me what to do. Listen to nature.
That's funny.....I had to triple check my spelling on that post just to make sure. Those little splits are the small logs I had as runners on the ground. I made the mistake of splitting 'em.
Well, I got an earlier start today to finish up before the heat hit. I stopped at 5 & 1/3 cord. I could easily fit more than another cord, but I shouldn't need it. I'll check some of the stuff in the stacks later this summer/early fall to see if I can move it to the shed before the snow gets bad. Hope to not even need all I have in the shed this year. Now, what shall I do? Where's that list? Looks like I'm done for the day as we're heading to Gaylord this afternoon. I can pick up another pair of work gloves.
