Went to a family gathering today at my brother-in-law’s. He and I were outside chatting about his plans for a deck rebuild this spring and he asked me if I wanted to take down the dying ash tree next to the deck and also take the wood (I mean do you even have to ask?). A quick glance at the bark and, yep that’s an ash. But hold on - those branch ends and twigs are definitely not ash. Looks like I’ll be taking down my first Norway maple. Nice size tree for what I think will be a couple truckloads once bucked up. Maybe three. Trunk section is about 14” DBH. Will get roughly 8 feet of trunk before the limbs start. It’s leaning right into his yard with a clear landing zone ... other than the deck. But he’s ripping it down this spring so no worries there! Hope to find some time in the coming weekends to get down there and get the job done for him. Between the locust pile at the farm this morning and this Norway maple, 2020 hoarding season is off to the right start for me!
Yup no doubt about it, Norway! Ive mistaken Norway for ash. Fast growing invasive species. Decent wood. Slightly better btu's than red maple. Seasons in a year. Splits pretty easy. Ill say the year started great for your hoarding! And the ice storm gave you some wood too! Hoard on and be safe!
That's some good firewood there! And, you are doing a service to the area by removing an invasive species. It will be ready next year, if you cut it, split it and stack it soon, and keep it dry. Thank you, John Bartram, for the Norway Maples!
I really like Norway maple for burning. It's better than ash for BTUs, and it splits easier too. Great score, and you'll be helping out family.
