Woke up to a sheet of ice and sagging trees. Power went out at 6 but came back right away. Been flickering all morning. Wife let the dogs out and we heard a crash out back. Something came down. Would rather have sleet at this point. It’s back and forth between heavy rain and mist. This thing is supposed to go until tomorrow morning. If it continues as freezing rain, this ice is going to get thick.
He's actually the father of my buddy, but I surely considered him a friend. If there is such a thing as a cool funeral, this - well to me, is one. He's being buried on the farm, in a pine box (his request) that his boys built for him that's going inside a pine "vault" that I built with his brother in law in my shop. All from lumber we cut at the fryburg fair last fall, he had been a part of that fair for over 40 years. Pretty natural and "organic" send off to a special guy.
R.I.P. That sounds like a nice send off. I went to a funeral of an old friend a year ago and beer was served! He would have liked that (but he was not a heavy drinker).
Yeah that's the kind of ice we usually get, sleet is a much "better" option... If you get much of that, even with no wind, you will have wood to cut....
what is your current temp? Good rain here, upper 30's. That breaking limbs sound reminds me of the Noreaster' we had back in March 2018. A quick foot of heavy wet snow stuck to everything. Creaking, cracking, snapping limbs made an eerie sound. Huge oak took out lines in main driveway for four days. No TV/internet for 8 days. Hope all are safe!
38 degrees here. Some sleet mixing in with light rain. Nothing freezing. Just wet. Nice and toasty with toasty with toasty hehe stove throwing out just the right amountil of heat. Turkey soup is pretty much made. My wife just fired up her bread machine. So, fresh bread to have with the soup, later.
Don't forget a decent lump of butter with the bread! It brings out the flavor! (February right around the corner now )
Indeed it is. There's been some brief discussions about February already. Hoping for a bit less snow than last year. The river is quite the sight mid-winter. But, you need to get back to it.
Still snow here. The garbage truck hit our cable line, which is sagging. We still have service though. A truck is supposed to come tomorrow. My husband tried to go to work, but turned around. Now he's working on my saws, yay!
No ice expected here, for once. It's a mudfest out there now and the winds have gone from the occasional gust to howling something fierce now. Looks like a good day for carving in the basement. Everyone up north stay safe. Wish I was there.
Man, few things on earth smell as good in the house as fresh baked bread! Add in a Hunker Down scenario, ten times better! Now I gotta go make some toast for lunch.
Many years back we got a wet snow that was sticking to the trees. Then the snow changed to freezing rain. Worst tree breakage ever, took weeks to clear the mess and get power fully restored to all areas; they cleared the roads by just pushing the trees to the side to be removed later. That was before I was burning wood; some cold days and nights for sure. I kept the freezers shut and packed ice in pots in the frig to keep from losing food. My friend had a spare generator but never offered and I didn't ask. I managed to only go a few days without power, others were not so lucky.
Still no freezing rain, but plenty of sleet. Still expecting it to melt, but there's enough to push around.
