Ive had plenty of new cars over the years... ...that probably won't ever happen again. I'm way more frugal now that im getting closer to retirement. My 401k and Roth are top priority now
Depends what they are using it for. Cruising around town? Likely a poor investment. Real estate agent? Probably needs a nice late model car. Someone who absolutely can’t break down on the way to work? Also could be a good investment. I used to have the same mindset as you. Perhaps the car itself isn’t the investment per se, but one can be purchasing time, or image or some other intangible. When one breakdown could cost thousands in lost income, the purchase of a new car could actually be considered an “investment”.
Well...would you look at that...my 401 has gone up in value every day for the last 2 weeks. Good nite, all.
99.9% of the time cars/trucks are depreciating assets...bad "investment" Best automotive "investment" I ever made was a beater I bought for a work car...paid $200 for it, only ever did basic repairs/maintenance to it, drove it 175k miles, all the while getting 40 MPG, sold it for scrap 6-7 years later at $250 after the lower ball joint broke and the CV axle pulled out of the trans leaving an oil slick all over the parking lot...winched it up on the trailer, straight to scrap yard...299,950 miles. My goal was 300k...didn't quit make it. Dang thing still ran great...just had rust worms...
What? You had tranny troubles in Ohio? Car gave up the ghost, huh? And then you had to pay for shipping to the scrap yard?
Since this thread was started I've moved to a total stock market approach. As passive as passive gets. Been working well.
Just remember lukem A good time to judge a strategy is not with the markets been up 30% for the last two years Not trying to be negative or a naysayer just remember perspective
I was 90/10 and will certainly need a rebalance this year as its likely much closer to 95/5 now. Similar approach, low cost index funds. I only ever hold my company as individual stock but that gets sold as soon as it vests (ESPP or RSU.) Lemme guess... another Boglehead?
Totally agree. I hope the market goes down for a while so I can buy some stuff on sale. I have 21 years before I turn 59.5 so it's going to be sitting there a while.
