Midwinter oh I will split it all. No barges needed. I do this every other year or so. The chips take a couple of years to rot and need to be recovered. I’ve been on the 5 or 6 year plan but can take a year off.
This all started 10 days ago with the chips and sweet gum. I’ve had multiple trucks going in and out every day since. I think after 3 or 4 more loads of wood I’ll stop. So far the rough tally is 17 loads of chips and 7 loads of rounds. 6 oak and 1 sweet gum.

Midwinter keep in mind each of those truckloads would cost the wood guys $100 or $150. So let’s say $100 the savings to them would be $2,400 over a couple of weeks. There are other private guys who will take the chips but my one guy told me they are all full and won’t take anymore right now.
We both made out pretty good on the whole thing

My brother lives near Saratoga north of Albany NY. He’s gonna get 2 loads of logs delivered. He was trying to figure out the math is it was worth it to pull his dump trailer down here for rounds. Don’t think it makes sense and I don't want to load him up. That would be a lot of work

Having to drive past NYC makes the whole thing untenable.

looks close to break even at best then there’s his time on the road and boy loading him tightly would be a lot of heavy work.
    BUT
I will send him more pics of the bounty:D

Thanks Mike, very generous of you. Might have to take you up on that one day. Would have to give my Bride a very good reason why I would need more firewood. Lmao....

Went out this morning to split some of the white oak. I split two skids. The first was branches 4” to 10”. It was good to get them out of the way but there are plenty more! I am really glad they didn’t chip the larger branches up.

Second skid was rounds most were 24” beautiful stuff and heavy. My little tractor could lift the skid only about a foot off the ground.

Horizontal splitting for branches and vertical for the rounds. No milk crate just an oval oak round for a seat.

Text from Olvin wood guy #2
Do I want a truck of wood and one of chips
    Sure...
Saved a spot next to the white oak. New load circled. It’s maple and oak. Maple to the front.
The Woodchips were great to spread. Their chipper must have new cutters. They spread like round pebbles. No pics of chips spread out.

now Willie wood guy #1 is supposed to text tomorrow we’ll see.

Got two more loads of chips today.
One load of beautiful red oak they the noodled so they could lift into truck. This was a favor to me to keep the length 16-18”.
They have no heavy equipment and can’t lift the whole round. This all went in my neighbors yard. Put a big load of chips there yesterday

I’m running out of room for wood. My 3 neighbors now have plenty of chips all spread out. I need another good load from the company with the good chipper to finish my one neighbor’s yard.
I spent a lot of time today hand loading the tractors bucket with rounds and piling them up higher. This is to make room for 2 more trucks of rounds. This will be enough. I can’t believe I’m even saying that. Very hard to stop. But I’ve got plenty for now.

    space made for wood

Looking at those big piles of round makes me anxious. So much to split!

Midwinter This is the third time I’ve done this. It will be there when I want it. With oak it’ll last, worse comes to worse the bark will fall off and the sapwood will get punky. The heartwood lasts and lasts. I’ve already split 3 skids of the beautiful white oak. Did the third one today between deliveries.
I split wood for my 80 yr old neighbor Charlie as well as my daughter. Told my daughters Fil to come over and use my splitter and take as much as he wants. The tree guys are happy to get rid of the chips and really go out of their way to only bring nice wood cut 16-20 inches. Oak mainly sometimes cherry, locust and if I must maple.

I’ve moved 8 cords of wood on pallets (24 pallet racks) to put fresh chips index them. Thank goodness for my little ford 1920!
Only have one empty rack left so I gave to make a few more. If this weather stays like it is I’ll get a bunch more made and filled.
