did some stacking first. I stack high cause I only have so much concrete. plus the stacks stay in place with longer splits. the first couple are the backside of the split pile. started cutting about 12:30 after I laid the logs out. finished cutting about 1:30. Had to stop once for fuel. upload pictures[/IMG] some of the tools. custom mingo-marker wheel. I cut everything to 22 inches. works best with my splitter, and owb. I lines up all the rounds in rows. it helps make the splitting faster. homemade splitter. now just gotta stack.. finished up about 2 pm. sorry i tried to do a caption with each picture.
you sure can!! its actually a S-185 (75hp). its bigger than a 753 (43 hp). the 753 will push the splits just fine though. that splitter started life as a 3 point mount on a tractor. I started modifying it to work on a skid loader. i have broken it and beefed it up more times than i can count. first it was a push block then a push 2 way wedge. then one day i decided to made it a push block on an 8 way. it works great for some stuff. trying to split thru a crotch makes a lot of kindling. for 30" dia. rounds and up. its best to split it into 3 big pieces, then work on each piece after that. I hope that makes sense. the wedges are made of really hard steel I scrounged off a job where they were driving big long I-beams 40' into the ground. then they would torch off the last foot or 2. they let me grab a few. its on a 4 inch ram. I offset the wedges so that (usually) once the piece cracks apart. then it goes thru the next wedge. oak splits easy. gum not so much.
I saw the first pic of the splitter and thought.. That's odd, I've never seen a side mounted splitter before. Then seen the round raised and had an inkling of what was to follow. Must be a breeze makin some splits with that equipment.
thank you!! and yea it is, for sure!! i thought about making it so it sticks straight out the front of the machine like this vvvvvv but after watching those work. i realized its much harder to line up the splitter when its so far out away from the machine.
Nice setup!!!! Better to have a sore hand from the controls than A sore back!! Plus the split time must be improved by 50% or more right?
Just remember that there are pros and cons. For sure they will split wood faster but do most of us need such a machine? They are nice. You'll see a big splitter in the pictures below along with smaller splitters. We use both types at our GTGs and split both vertically and horizontally. Some are run by men and some by ladies. What a wonderful time we had too! btw, the big splitter belongs to Armbru84. Just look at the smile on that Aussie's (leoht) face!
Good points Backwoods. My splitter is midway between the two. I like big splits, so the eight way splitter would not work for me. If I could get away with the small splits, I would go with the big equipment for sure as time is sparse. To each their own and enjoy!!!!
Nice wedge you made yourself. I'm thinking about doing something like that on my next splitter build. I sure want a skidstear but I'm afraid that might come with a divorce attorney.
