Merry Christmas to all of you! Ok so it’s Christmas Eve and the tree guy I’ve been dealing with stopped by at 8:00 this morning with a cord of oak to be dumped. Said he needed to empty the truck for today. Ok by me, small load but I’m happy to get the wood. Got the tractor out to spread the load of Woodchips from the night before. Texted Merry Christmas to both of the tree guys dumping here. Got a text back a little later
Truck shows up at around 1:30 The load was so heavy it would not lift to dump so we threw rounds from the front of bed to the back. Finally it would lift more than a foot.
Ended up with a great load of wood and before he could pull out the other truck pulled in with a load of chips. We put that in a different spot. As the guy left he said see you FRIDAY
Good for you. A nice Christmas present for sure. That ain't going to happen around here with a face cord of green Oak going for $90 to $100 +delivery!
That's amazing! That's why I prefer that the tree guys just leave them in log length, as much as possible. Great score!
I agree and this company I’ve dealt with before. No heavy equipment. All loaded in truck by hand. I don’t know how they lifted the big white oak rounds maybe 3 of them together? 2 years ago I got rid of 2 truckloads that were cut10 to 12” what a waste and told them no more wood. Hooked up with them again 2 weeks ago. Working well so far. They’ve brought 6 nice loads
timusp40 there aren’t a lot of people here that heat with wood. Most of the tree guys do not split and sell wood either. They have to pay to dump it $100 to $150 per load. Same with Woodchips And I happened to be open on Christmas Eve
I just noticed your location. OK I understand. a couple of months ago I watched a crew clearing a lot not too far away. They were cutting down prime maple up to 6" in diameter and running it straight thru their chipper. Would not let me take any of it. Enjoy that oak!!
Heck of a nice Christmas present there mikeward That'll surely make for a nice toasty future Christmas Eve.
timusp40 Around here if a homeowner does not want the wood from a tree removal he pays to have it taken away. Many times you’ll see wood cut up in rounds and left at the curb for the taking. Many advertise on Craig’s list or fb marketplace free wood. I have seen a 10 inch tree fed into a chipper, what a waste!
such a shame!!! I'd be out there trying to chain myself to it. LOL!!! JK!! the thought would cross my mind though.
Nice to have that dropped off to you!! Merry Christmas!! I can’t help but notice how they do chip up the trees, sure does seem like a waste to me but at the same time makes sense. I had gathered from other comments on threads here that wood chips go for a price in lawn care or playgrounds and whatnot. Seems like they have a better way to make a buck through that outlet than leaving a bunch of rounds at the owners expense. That being said they’ll likely chip to the maximum width and throw the rest out or find something else to do with it(maybe they get their greenhorns in the summer to chop and split to sell?). This would depend on the demand... but there are pros and cons to the whole yard waste management if they dump it out and it’s a bummer when the policy of the company is to say no to folks who want it. Liability and whatnot I suppose.
Will you have time to split all that? And stack it? At some point, will it be too much? Can you send a barge of it to Boston, like they do with heating oil?
FatBoy85 The chips aren’t the greatest. They have small branches mixed in. Most are cut 8 to 10 inches but the thin tips of branches make spreading with a tractor bucket a challenge. They bunch up into a ball and dig into loose chips underneath. Every once in a while you get a truckload of just nice big chips and they spread great! But those loads are from chipping the big branches and trunks. I often worry about getting a flat tire from a small spear of wood but it’s so soft with the loose chips... Oh our town will take the chips for bug $ and then re grind them, mix with ground leaves and regained again smaller and give away to public or business. They even bag em and you can throw 10 bags in car no coat. Or get by truckload free
