Tire alternative

For this type of use i thought this was a cool idea. I like the tire better because you can work around it but for what hes using this backstop for i like it. He seems to be a likable you-tuber also.

When my splits mound up around the chopping block it sort of works the same.

 

Looks pretty good, just seems pretty tight and limiting from a mobility standpoint. With the tire I can put two or three of those size rounds in and just walk around the tire and never stop swinging my axe. I've been a tire guy for years but I went away from that later this season and went with the flick method straight from the pile. I'm touching the wood too many times. Like him I'm stacking next seasons rounds to get them off the ground, then loading them into the tire, splitting them and then stacking the splits into my prestove stacks. If I just unloaded them and split straight from the pile I'd eliminate two touches.

 

Tough to do the flick method with alot of hardwoods. Like buckin billy Ray is the best at it but its all soft woods. Id like to see somebody do that with a pile of hardwoods. Im thinking it would be alot harder. But i agree with everything you said about the tire

 

Yeah Buckin' is the best. I'm out west so softwood is king out here. The flick works on green oak no more than about 12" but I don't bother hand splitting seasoned or big oak. I don't hate myself that much...

 

I want to send him some pine to beat on and we'll see how long that scatter shield lasts.
