Just got off the phone with Amazon, i had received 2 emails supposedly from Amazon, telling me my account had been compromised, and they needed my information so they could update my account. I called Amazon cust service, they told me NO emails had been sent to me by Amazon at all. So, if it sounds the least bit fishy, don't take the bait!!!
Thanks for the heads up on that one. I’ve been getting bogus text messages claiming to be from Netflix saying I haven’t paid my bill, and asking me to click on a random website. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Have gotten no less than 6 calls from "Apple Inc." this AM telling me that my Apple device is compromised and I will loose all my data if I don't dial 1 to connect to their support dept. to remedy the problem. Several different telephone #s.
These scammers really burn me. I won't say what I feel needs to be done to them. Just saw today a grandmother got scammed out of 10 grand by one of those, "Your grandson is in jail" scams. I don't understand why people fall for these scammers.
When you get a suspicious email, hover your cursor over the senders name, after a second the actual email address it came from will pop up...if it says its from Amazon, (for example) but the address says something bogus like [email protected], then you know to just delete it without even having risking opening it. At least my Hotmail account works this way...I think others do too.
PayPal started using a third party to handle certain emails. I got an email about you need to blah blah blah and I ignored it because it wasn't from PayPal. However, it was legit; I did a bit of research and found out about the third party email they were using. I told PayPal that it was a security risk doing such things as people may click on spam/trojan links. Of course PayPal just ignored me.
The one my Mom gets a kick out of is the phone call from Revenue Canada about the taxes she is in arrears for and they are sending the RCMP to her house to collect. Her response - Send them and lots of luck!
I recently got off the phone with an older relative, got almost $500, thank goodness they called the bank to stop it! These scammers are relentless and mean! The one I get a kick out of is the call that says they are microsooofffft and my computer is illegally downloading, no good reply when I tell them I do not have a computer How are you feeling Woodwidow ? Cold, ears and throat?
After hitting up my IRA, I was asked what is the $$ to be used for?..... and was explained to that the question is asked to help prevent fraud/scams. Just recently (they explained) an elderly woman requested a significant amount (their description) of $$ to invest or send to or something like that scam. They (IRA handlers) hadn't heard of it so reported to their nationwide funds handler and got that investigation team involved. Yup, its a scam and the woman saved her $$. Good news and glad that the company my advisor works with has that policy.
