I've learned that later in life. I still have to get rid of all the stuff I hoarded when I was younger, though.
Me thinks they go too far. If that was my house they just stripmined next to, I'd be pizzed! Lots of communities have stood up and made them put their lines underground, where the problem is solved, once and done.
I was all excited because I got a letter in the mail from the town that they were repaving our road, and in the process would be taking down 40 trees, and another 50 on a nearby road. Paving day comes, no trees cut. Seems odd so I ask a paving guy about the trees, “Oh yeah, there all cut!” Huh!!! Not a single tree was cut. A bunch were painted with orange paint, but none taken down. Many are dead and sticking into the road. I spoke to someone I know who lives on the road with the 50 trees. She claims she spoke to someone from the town and because the tree company couldn’t have free reign to take whatever trees they wanted “including high dollar milling trees” that the town would have to come up with significantly more than they originally bid it for, so the town decided to take zero down. Makes no sense. This wasn’t discussed beforehand??? I had big scrounging plans...BIG ONES!!!
Not sure if i mentioned this or not but any dead branches on that tree? If so cut all the nubs off, they are loaded with resin and red pineS seem to have more than white.
I think we've determined that the three trees taken down were pitch pines. All the limbs and branches are now under the trunks propping them up. That's the way Asplundh stacked everything. It makes it convenient to cut rounds off the trunks, though.
Never heard it called a sissy stick before (I always just called it a holder)...my vocabulary is expanding
I use it for kindling. I also like mixing it in with hardwood when burning during the warmer daylight hours. I find it's also really helpful when getting a fire going; either from a cold firebox or a reload from coals or an overnight burn.
The power company cut 2 pines down on my property a year and a half ago. I cut them short, split them and threw them in the shorts and uglies pile.
Today I'll try and split another big pitch pine round, it's 10° out, so it'll be nice and frozen. Maybe it will shatter, instead of absorbing my wedge like a sponge, which is what happened above freezing.
