Driving home this afternoon I was about 4 miles from home, it was bright and sunny out. Started climbing the hill and finally get to our road and it’s now snowing pretty heavily. Parked and got my stuff inside. It quicky slowed to light snow so I let the dogs out and grabbed my saw to start cutting up some ash lengths from the last roadside score. Get the saw started and next thing I know it’s a white out snow squall! Lasted about half an hour. Picked up an inch or two of powdery snow. Suns back out and can feel the temp falling quickly. Still cutting!
I just put a Bambi roast in for dinner tonight and gonna head down to stoke the fire and put on the overalls to go split for a while. 22* with a windchill of 8* with the flag on the porch flapping pretty good. only with hydraulics...
I got home and got the tractor with trailer and splitter setup. Filled the trailer (about 1/2 of a cord. Went to pull away to the stacking area, just a whole lot of tire spinnage. I ended up having to get the Kioti and pull just the tractor out, then go back and get the trailer. Did get it all stacked and everything back in their outbuildings before darkness fell. I have chains for the Ford tractor. Guess I should put them on if I plan to do much more winter work. Was hoping to get two trailer loads which would have finished off the latest stack (about 2.75 cords). Oh well, one is better than none.
I was able to sneek out to get an hour of splitting time in this evening... It's date night at our house but she was out cold in the easy chair when I got off work. She was still sawing logs (her style) in the chair when I came back in. She never knew I was sneaking around on her... LOL Got started on the stacks of rounds out in the old pasture that are up on pallets. This wood is slated for '21-'22 heating season. Whole bunch of Honey Locust in this stash... There is a mix of other stuff in the stacks too, but all good hardwood.
I had a squall warning come thru my phone Woodsman . Phone made a noise i wasnt familiar with. The area of Wallinford i was in got a few flakes, but home in North Haven got a dusting.
I wish i didnt have to use them MAF143 & eatonpcat but my hands take a beating in the cold dry air. Moreso if they get wet too.
Did some more splitting and stacking today after work. Single digits tonight. You can see Tito boy hiding behind the cart on his wool blanky. My wife says he needs a blanket out there. Hes her third baby
I didn’t know we were supposed to have some squalls come through today. Although I suspect the weather service didn’t expect the squalls to work their way this far east. Hit here like a white wall. Could barely see over to the sugarhouse.
Ni Nice work sir! Did you have barrel fire going too? Did some SS myself this afternoon. Maybe 1/4 cord red oak. Making room for more Asplundh wood. Jonesing to go hoarding!
Me neither. I always like the first good freeze in December when its cold and dry. Ill be outside and enjoying making firewood. Not this year though. Freeze, then mud, then slop, then mud. Almost got stuck in my PA in mud this morning. Now freeze, then another thaw coming...New England weather! At least no snow in the extended forecast!
Yes sir the barrell was lit when my wife got home from shopping. She wanted me to wait for her to light it
Got me in the mood. I went out and cut some on a large downed maple. No splitting, but cut some rounds from the larger branches. I wanted to get some good size tree tops in another spot, but one of the guy’s Jeep was parked in a place that I knew which tree stand he was hunting. This weekend maybe.
15 - 45 degrees & sun is the best woodcutting weather imo. Snow is good for felling & skidding, keeps the wood cleaner. Once it gets over a foot deep it gets to be tough going though.
cut up a small stash of red oak that were too long for the stove when it warmed up to 20ºF this aft. Sunny day with a dusting of snow here and there. Does that count ? Took about 45 pulls to get the saw started but then she purred like a, well a saw. Still not quite over the flu but the fresh air was nice even though my lungs didn't exactly like the cold.
