I like making firewood in the snow. I especially like hauling rounds out in the snow. Felling trees, bucking them and splitting all are done in snow all winter. I don't do any of firewood work when it's hot out, not unless I've got no choice.
I try to limit it to spring and fall when the temperatures are more reasonable and it’s not slippery or humid.
I must be weird then also! About 50 and sunny is the best. But I would much rather have 80 than 20 or snow
I will cut, stack, and split in the snow. It gets me out doors and gives me some exercise during the winter. I was just doing some today.
Winter is typically the slow season for my primary business so it's an ideal time for firewood and snow is worlds better than tropical humidity and mosquito's like the seven plagues of Egypt.
Just came in a bit ago. I split till it's beer 'O' clock, then it's time to head in... It's peaceful and I like the cool air. My hands did get a little wet and cold this evening... Time for some new gloves. The kevlar ones I have for cutting are definitly summer gloves. My wood handling / splitting gloves aren't much better... Any suggestions from the cool cuttin' weather crowd??? I'm thinking plain old insulated leather work gloves kept sprayed with silicone. Is there a better solution? I'm always looking for a better way.
These are the times of year i like to do it also, but sometimes spring and fall = mud, so i cant get in to get the wood out. Snow usually means (but not always) that the ground is frozen, so i have to go when i can. I will mill but i dont cut firewood in the summer. Ever.
Yep, me too. I do all my firewood work Spring - Fall. Most of the splitting happens around August, none of it happens now.
I have been out cutting splitting and loading when snow is falling, but nothing n the ground affecting footing or traction. Kind of pleasant time to be in The woods. Wet mushy snow and ground, no way, but nice cold day with dry snow and hard ground, I would do.
Heck ya! If you like that you should try cutting wood sometime during a thunderstorm while lightning flashes around you and hail bounces off your forestry helmet while you scream, “Yeeeee-hawwww!” over the roar of your chainsaw going full throttle. Oh yeah.
I enjoy making firewood in the snow, if it’s a fairly decent day. 20ish with little to no wind is good.
I worked for asplundh, ill one up you, all that but also 80 feet up in a bucket woooo yaaaa good times. However snow storms were the best, at night with just a headlamp and the guy on the ground holding a flashlight on you
I CSS in the snow. Rarely cutting for safety reasons and if so im my PA bucking/noodling. My only gripe is wet hands. Once they get wet hard to keep em warm and cold weather wreaks havoc on them as well even with lotions/crack creams etc. Prefer it when it well below freezing and snow is powdery. If i know snow is coming and i have wood for processing i will cover it and a work area like Woodwhore does. Today not good with above freezing temps and ice melting/dripping although i did tarp some red oak rounds at my friends to split and stack. May work on those later. Cold and dry below freezing perfect firewood making conditions IMO.
Lotions and crack creams... Brad, Brad, Brad... I did like your "Run Forest Run" shirt... I would save that one for special occasions...
