This was next to the driveway at the house i was working on this afternoon. Close to 40" DBH. Stopped to admire the size and couldnt identify it. I know its not ash or tulip poplar. Didnt think to check for leaves on the ground. Thats english ivy on the bark, not poison. IMG_1552.JPG IMG_1553.JPG

No idea, but looks like the top is off. Better drop it and make it firewood!

Interesting. Could it be locust? Some deep grooves in the bark up higher on the tree in second picture. Looks like some gnarly branch growth - is that growth the tree responding to being topped? Hard to tell.

Not locust. I can spot that real easy. I believe it is the tree responding to being topped.

With that big thick bark it could be cottonwood. If it had leaves you could tell for sure.

Walnut, yeah could be. That's a good call.:salute: Hard to say exactly from the picture and not seeing the inside of the tree or anything else. Look for walnuts on the ground in the area.

Tough call on this one. Walnut would be a good guess based on the bark. If it is a BW, that is a monster of a tree. I hate seeing trees topped.

Looks like cottonwood we get around here. This is a huge one by my house. Didn't have my tape but it's over 50" because that was the size of his fishing rod when we used that to gauge it.

Looks like willow to me. Is it continuing to grow from the busted off top? Willow will continue to grow from its broken or cut off spots. Bark looks like willow too.

To add to my post earlier. Here is a chunk of willow. I burn it all the time. Got a trailer load of it a couple years ago. It burns well. It is a soft wood, so it goes relatively quick. E421FAF2-A6CB-4373-9D91-2FBFD311388A.jpeg

Is this the same as weeping willow im familiar with Cash Larue & Mag Craft ? Ive worked for these folks for a couple years and have driven in and out that driveway multiple times and cant recall seeing the weeping branches. Do the limbs look like willow?

It’s not weeping willow. I think it’s called black willow. They are very common out here. They get gigantic too. The branches look like willow branches to me. Willow branches grow in a similar chaotic fashion.
