Absolutely!!! Maple is a great firewood. Seasons much quicker than Oak, and throws good heat. Rock Maple has deeper ridges than the softer Maples once larger in size.
Cherry looks scaly with a dark brown bark, not quite as good as Maple, but still a good upper mid range firewood.
Tree guy loads it into my trailer. He told me locust and I about died, cherry is good stuff, but I was yearning for some locust!
I’m not familiar with Locust, but pictures I’ve seen show deep grooved bark that crosses over itself, forming diamonds almost not straight ridges like your Maple has
Hard to tell with out branches but the tree service might be correct it is Honey locust it is hard like black locust but it has the red/brown center it does not have the rot resistance for ground contact as black locust but above ground it is very rot resistant it is actually in the same family as the Kentucky coffee tree burns great splits easy nice score !!
forgot to add that there are some hybrids that do not have the thorn clusters that the honey locust are known for they were bred for landscape use JB
Its not black locust or cherry IMO/IME. Ive never seen any of the four maples im familiar with (sugar, Norway, red aka swamp, silver) have the reddish heartwood like that. Ive seen pics of honey locust on here (never processed any that im aware of) and it resembled that like JB Sawman said. Either way, great score and take it all!
Dat ain't like no locust I ever seed! Black locust Honey locust, and it usually has armor piercing spikes growing from it. This is a hybrid landscape version.
Hey buzzsaw I will try (if the rain ever stops here) to take a picture of my black locust saw log pile but I do not want to send you into locust envy I think between the 2 piles I have 2500BD ft of black locust and a lot of good firewood from the logs I cant use for lumber I have 2 customers that take all I can saw but if you ever take a road trip stop by the shop I can probably hook you up with slabwood I will try to get you picture this weekend as a footnote M new sign for my sawmill just came back from the carver it is Honey Locust it came out of a 12ft long x50 inch wide trunk the biggest one I have ever processed JB
It looks like honey locust to me as well. The thin branches show some stippling like cherry, so it can be mistaken for that. Is it pretty hard to cut? This is some small diameter honey locust in the foreground.
Thanks for the offer, but im a bit too far. It will be cool to see the pics though! I know of a couple areas around here where i may be able to score some roadside. One is a blowover in a thicket so a lot of work to retrieve it. Hoping this Winter sometime when dry and frozen ground. Too much rain and mud here now.
