Most definitely Walnut, however I'm wondering if it's English Walnut rather than Black Walnut. Less variation of the heartwood, lot of sapwood, bark is a little different. Likely impossible to tell at this point without leaves/nuts or analysis of the wood but more semantics than anything. Will burn just the same. Unless you want to take up carving or turning etc... Then you've got a prize there.
I've never heard of Black Maple or even seen Black Walnut around here. I once saw a Walnut tree in the 70's in a city in Mass. And that was it.
extremely easy is gooder in my book. I hand split. Split some frozen white oak this afternoon and could almost one hand it with the Fiskars.
buZZsaw BRAD I hand split everything as well but don’t have nearly the amount you have unfortunately. I’ve read about how frozen logs split easier I’m definitely going to have to try it.
I hand split for 35 years, with kids and all that came with that, working overtime etc. Now I am older with a splitter I don't know how I did back then.
I guess I'm going to have to import a few when I get up there. Walnut is one of my favorite trees for many reasons, oddly enough the least of which is firewood. It does smell real nice, outside, when you burn it though. But as a natural resource I think everyone should have a couple/few Walnuts on their property.
I agree!!! just can't plant too close to your tomato plants or pine trees. I lost a red maple cause of the walnut.
