I've been thinking about this...just spitballing here so may be way off base.

Is it possible that the draft was still good enough to pull everything through the chimney but the leak removed the resistance the stove would normally have to 'breathe' and it was sucking air easier than it should have? Does the system work like a vacuum?

Not sure if that makes any type of sense but it sounds good in my head haha

with a stove temp of 750-800 external that would suggest a exhaust temp in the 1000+ range ( in the center of the flue pipe) at the right mix of unburned flue gasses and the air leak sure it could light off- just like the secondaries in the stove burn chamber its self- least wise in my simple mind that sounds more than plausible.

    On a completely different note...

Just got home from work. I loaded the stove around 330ish this morning. It was still warm to the touch but not really putting off any heat.

However this is what was left after I raked the coals forward 14 1/2 hours later...

And a small load to get through the next few hours until the overnight load...

Lit right up after a minute or two. Just awesome!

I have to admit that I am impressed with people’s suggestion of the nc-30. I would buy one if I could get a good deal on one, but I haven’t been able to locate a stove in-store let alone find one at a bargain price. Found a steal on a Myriad II, but the no-30 has better emission specs, so I’ve been patient.

I've heard people talk about the price dropping on the nc30s in the spring. I'm not sure if that still happens every year or not.

Home Despot had really good deals on them in the spring for a few years in a row...but usually only at 1 store...everybody had to check around them until "the store" was found...then once it was known, you could set "your store" to that specific store number and get the sale price...but unless you wanted to go on a road trip to pick it up, you paid another $99 to have it shipped to your door...they drop shipped from the factory. I think the last time they did this sale was winter '15/'16...I bought one to resell..."the store" was Durango Colorado. Ended up installing my NC30 in my in-laws new house for break even price, I think they were around $1300 all in, that's new stove, new Supervent class A chimney and double-wall pipe...which was on sale too.
Haven't seen any super-duper sales on the NC30 since...AM/FM Energy has about the best price I know of...$825 shipped.

    Wow! I appreciate that.
Best prices I’ve seen lately by far. Factory 2nds doesn’t concern me. I may pull the trigger after Christmas... just to put one back. Not sure that can be beat. I doubt if those $600-$700 deals come back.

That’s in the ballpark of the Drolet I found...except the door wobbled or I’d have bought it because of the bigger ash pan. It doesn’t burn as clean though...Myriad II that is...similar price. The NC-30 meets 2020 reg’s, I think.

From what I have read, most of the time you cant even tell what is supposed to be wrong with it...

Yes, all of this matches my experience and observations. I too bought the Durango deal, and that is the last time I have seen the spring sales.

The "numbers" meet the 2020 requirement as far as I can tell, but I have yet to see it on an "approved" list.

That is when I ordered my 30 also. Really like it. Installed it in the garage workshop (workshop, heck; more like a Dave cave!) a few months later. Single wall up to the class A stainless which goes through the ceiling and then attic and roof.

We had a valuable member in Mike Holton from Englander and wish he hadn't stopped posting.

Oh my. Noooo good. Perhaps I am thinking of another stove rep? One left here or the other site and took a completely different career path. Probably the one you speak of. The one who was hastled! :picard:

You thinking of Fyrebug? He was SBI rep, decided to go work for a hardware store/chain/company or something IIRC...

Right where I want to be.
Pretty sure they aren't. Mine came straight from the factory, ordered through a store in Tennessee. Packaged exactly as I've seen them in the HD.
Mine was $650+tax+$99 shipping. The driver even pulled it up the drive to the walkway (parked in the road), and it was all a sheet of ice.

That's certainly cheap enough. How long ago did you get yours? Do you have the name of the store?
