20191108_184312.jpg So after a few years of my FIL constantly fixing something on the stove I may have him talked into getting a modern stove. A few years ago I took over the firewood at are place and have been bitching ever since about the stove needing loaded every 4 hours.
So my question is what are some good options to replace this old stove with.

Many good options out there. I hope you FIL enjoys his free time not fixing or reloading the stove.

I was just gifted this exact same stove from my brother-in-law. It is only going to used to take the chill out with a fire or two a day during hunting season when friends and family are sleeping out there.

For my purposes it beats the old tired stove I replaced it with.

I would be interested to know from folks here what I should be looking out for considering the application in my case.

Its a good stove. FIL sade when it was new 8 hour burn times were normal. Ares has close to 30 years of every winter use and is showing its age. Theres just better stoves available today.
If I could find a brand new one hidden in a warehouse I'd just go that rout and skip all the EPA crap a new stove brings with it.

I agree with Backwoods Savage, especially if he wants a piece of art that provides heat. If he is looking for something that doesnt have to be so pretty and puts out crazy heat on a budget I would recommend an Englander 30NC.

What kind of space is he heating?

House is around 2300 square foot. But we close off the hallway to the bedrooms at night. I'd rather grab another blanket then be to hot when I sleep.

If your FIL likes the look of his old stove but knows that he needs to update it he might consider Jotul stoves. They share the same look with VC.

I noticed Scotty Overkill 's Napolean is pretty too. If looks are not important NC-30 is well liked here with a decent price tag.
