buZZsaw BRAD If you have a lot of snow on the ground when you fell the next oak you are talking about, be careful when it hits the ground, it is possible it could start sliding down hill and it would be good if you were out of the way. Stay safe.

    Lol

Deep in the forest are two trees growing together. A beech, and a birch.

One day, a small tree begins to grow between them. The birch says to the beech, "Do you think that's a son of a birch or a son of a beech?"

The beech says "I don't know if that's a son of a birch or a son of a beech."

Just then a woodpecker landed on the small sapling. The birch asked the woodpecker, "Woodpecker, you're a tree expert. Is that tree you're on a son of a birch or a son of a beech?"

The woodpecker pecked the sapling a few times then looked up at the birch and the beech. "This sapling is neither a son of a birch nor a son of a beech. It is, however, the best piece of ash I've stuck my pecker into before."

Sometimes if your lucky, but they do dry out much faster.

I have a 32"-ish DBH Red Oak in the woods at work that is just like this one buZZsaw BRAD (punky sapwood) gotta drop the 40' or so tall trunk sometime this winter...it was already topped due to its condition and proximity to high voltage power lines. Heck, just the (large!) limbs from the top made better than a cord of wood (less than 2 though I'd say) And this was only half the tree...the other twin stem (and top) was lopped off about 5 years ago...get to thinking about it, I'm probably burning some of that this winter...

Got about 5”. Not great for working on the ground but it could be a lot worse :)
No pics of the hang up. Forgot the phone that day.
A pic from yesterday bringing them down to the brook.
A pic from today. Looked at the order I dropped them yesterday, not happy, so I played musical logs this morning.
The only one that’s set is the one on the left. Bag of concrete under a bearing surface. The others need to get moved around a bit, squared up and cut to length. I’ll make a post when I get a little more accomplished. Hoping I have enough decking. Crossing at an angle forced me to go longer.
PS, that small pine in the distance will go bye bye to lessen the approach angle.

Took a quick walk into the woods to check out the other red oak spar Erik B , MikeInMa & brenndatomu . 30" dbh. gonna be tricky to fell. May go diagonal uphill toward angle of first pic. If it rolls a tree there to stop it. Im wondering how good the wood is at the top as there was a large dead limb causing rot and a weak spot where it snapped almost clean off. The broken off stem was the first wood I cut with my, new to me 460 in March of 2018. IMG_1510.JPG IMG_1511.JPG

No.. I don't feel lucky Punk. I find splitting punky wood the most dangerous wood to split. Without the logs solid grain to guide the careening maul head through the split it might instead fly out the side of the log in scary uncontrolled directions. Whenever I teach a novice how to split I always make sure they learn on a solid log.

Great work there Brad! and yes as Woodwhore mentioned sometimes that saturated wood behaves nothing like fresh cut green wood and so dries out relatively fast

Has a curve, but the center of gravity is pretty much vertical. With no top i dont think it'll be an issue with it going in the right direction. Ill post a thread when the time comes. Gotta make more wood wedges too.

I would suggest notching the tree on the uphill side, look at the wedge you cut, and decide if it's worth it.

Might be a good tree to toss a line around, so to pull it uphill by hooking to the base of another tree with a come-a-long, or similar device...

    Nice work
I hate to see a dead tree go to waste. Almost as much as a good axe head going to waste.

    Re Haft that thing!

And when it got icy, we would have to wrap barb wire around our feet so we could get traction!

    Those eyes though!!!:jaw:

Your cat has lifeless eyes chief, like a dolls eye

Yeah, looks like the eyes of a cold blooded killer. I have been dealing with a mouse infestation since the new neighbor (contractor who purchased the house next door) gutted the back garage which was basically a dump and shelter for wild animals. The mice now invaded my home in very large numbers marauded my pantry to the point of leaving a barnyard smell in just a few weeks. I had to throw out my whole stash of pasta...and I'm Italian so you know how empty and powerless I feel right now :(
In the last 4 days I caught 12 mice with 3 victor snap traps that I rigged with hair pin triggers and I still saw one run across my kitchen floor this morning  It seems like there is no end to them and now Im going to have to get those cruel sticky traps because I feel I have no choice. I'm not a cat person, but I am now really appreciating that cat picture you took. My dog could care less if a family of raccoons moved in let alone mice :picard:
