After choosing the spot for our new bigger wood shed, I decided this big limb needed to come down before the build...here is the story from Monday evening...take down was accomplished with MS180 and a huskihl XS362... We have started CSS it. I'll get a measurement when it's done...
They never do. I looked at all your pics Jeff but not sure what type of tree. I saw oak leaves but then some rounds looked like poplar and the trunk looked like silver maple.

11'x15'x8' ...have a thread started "Wood shed floor" with pics of the 2 frames and lumber to start on it.
If the limb is 28", the trunk must be twice that! I wonder how old it is, and if they grow faster in the south? Good safe job, T.Jeff!
No sir, it was very much alive. When I notched it at the trunk and then blocked off a few more rounds to reduce the size, when I got back to the trunk, sap water was running out...I knew the main trunk was getting bad, and if that limb fell, it would tear up both sheds...
The most common oak around my town is water oak and the problem is, the old ones are big, 28" to 40" DBH and they are dying. Maybe they just don't live as long as some oaks. The wood splits well. They can grow with a real tall, straight trunk before the first limb and it can sure make long boards but the quality of board is not as high as oaks such as white oak or even plain red oak, I am told. A neighbor had a tree guy take down three the other day and took the big trunks to a crosstie mill. Yep, that's about as big a limb as you see, huge!
Thanks, water oaks do tend to grow faster than some other oaks do. I don't think 2 grown folks can reach around it. I might get my big tape and measure it.
Yes sir, the water oak is very commy down here in the South. We had this one trimmed back a few years ago, so if it fell it wouldn't hit the house or sheds. Took a lot of weight off the limbs.
Nice job on that lift! I bet those pieces had some considerable ‘THUD!’ to their falls to the ground!
Yes sir, they did. That chunk on the FEL was so heavy, couldn't lift it with straight boom up, had to curl up the bucket. It probably weighed 800+lbs.
Before I had the garage built, I had some "trees of concern" dropped in a preventive measure. The largest was about the size of your limb.
According to Woodweb's log weight calculator.... Assuming that Water Oak log with tongs suspended from the loader is 5' long with a 26" small end and a 28" large end, it should be right at about 1200 lbs.
