Cold brisk day to be out. Felt good to cut in the cold. Another tree from GF's mothers house. This beech was partially blown over several years ago and been hung up ever since. Ive been telling her mom id cut it down for the wood. 15" DBH. Cut it off about 4' up and it drops off...still hung up. Cut off another chunk, tree drops but still hung up. Cut off a third chunk and down she comes amidst a shower of beech leaves. Nothing like a good adrenaline rush to warm you up on a cold day! Couple hours of work bucking and carrying the rounds out to driveway's edge. Ill split them sometime in the near future once i have a place to stack them. Better than a face cord, but not quite a half. Camera battery went dead. Had to run home (two driveways down) and charge it to take last two pics. Snow had started. Sorry for the title metalcuttr ! I had "Mo Hickory" a couple weeks ago, so had to name this tree. Did it push you over the edge?
It wasnt that hung up at the top and i knew it would go, just how many chunks it would take was the question.
That's some nice beech! Did you find the rounds to be lighter than oak or maple of similar size? I was taking pictures in 20° temps this morning, and my phone kept shutting down. Had to keep warming it up in the car.
Nice work Brad! Thanks for running back to get the camera charged. More times than I'd like to admit. I smell another couple of those stumpcutter/ droppers coming my way this winter. I've guy a couple of eab killed ash at my woodlot and a nice barkless dead standing elm. There's are all in the main though canopy of the woods, so unless everyone guess perfectly, I'll have more leaners on my resume.
Since beech has more BTU's than either oak or even sugar maple, beech rounds should weigh more. They sure do in my experience.
I didnt cuase the hang up papadave and Locust Post just freed it from it. It was still attached to the rootball and alive.
Nice pyramid stack! In one of your former lives you must have been chief engineer for the Great Pyramid of Giza!
Nah! Just the great pyramid of buZZsaw! I was going for photogenic log pile in the "best rounds pictures" thread!
No murder. I just relieved her of the hang ups of life! Voluntary treeslaughter as its known as on the FHC!
hey no photos...it didnt happen. I, like everyone else on here love pics! Besides i had already taken the first few prior.
I had rolled the first few rounds up to the driveway as they were the closest, then i carried the rest. Id say slightly lighter than sugar and oak, but not much. I usually keep my flip phone in my pocket, but had it in the PU. Had the cold warning on it. I take my pics with an old digital camera.
Handsplitter? Im confused? Didnt you guys have a big splitting GTG yesterday with all the hydro's??? Splits about the same as sugar maple IME. Maybe a little tougher. Can have burled wavy grain sometimes. Wont know til i take the Fiskars to it of course. AWHNR!
Thanks! I wanted to put the 261 on top to take the pic, but battery on camera died. Took both home and charged battery and saw went to shop.
