Planning on Going to the in-laws farm tomorrow or Wednesday for Thanksgiving (weather permitting). Suppose to get 5-7” of wet snow

At least I have about 4 cords dried and stacked in the machine that I save for when the weather sucks. Plan on getting about a cord or so home between my truck and cargo trailer. I need more ready to burn wood at home.

My rule of thumb is I have to CSS at least as much as I hall home.., its going to be a PIA CSSing in wet snow, but I’m still looking forward to it! :saw::axe::stacker: ❄️

Ya but working in that stuff makes you feel alive. Then go inside for something hot and sit by the stove.

Is there a barn or shed you can shelter under while you split? Maybe you can stage things pre-snow so you can minimize the slop. Can your FIL do some prep?

not a huge fan of working in the snow, but sometimes ya gotta do what ya gotta do. GF has laughed at me splitting in it. Ill try to cover whatever ill be working on in the snow to minimize the slop factor. Its either splitting of stacking.
Ive always liked when i stop for a minute and will just watch the snow fall...very peaceful IMO!

Wish I could sit by the fire, but in-laws don’t have a stove:hair:

I’ll be ready for something cold to drink! I’m usually pretty sweaty underneath my overalls after CSS in 30 degree weather!

Good idea, but FIL is not able to work anymore (health reasons). I have plenty to load in the shed so if the weather is that bad I will have to stay in.

I might have to load rounds and bring to the shed to split and stack if it’s real bad. I prefer to split and stack as close as possible, but you got to do what you got to do!

After all I was able to get some pretty good CSS so far. 3rd pic is about a cord off Ash I took down on Wednesday and split and stacked. 1st and 2nd pick was Thanksgiving morning work. I thought was Ash, but the splits don’t look like Ash and it splits really easy. I Hope it’s decent BTU what ever it is.

Wife said I can’t go back out after dinner to finish up! It’s family time now.

1st & 2nd pic look like it might be Black Walnut.

    That's my official Thanksgiving guess.

The grain and color really look like black walnut, but I’ve never seen any walnuts around, guess I’ve never looked for any though? There was a huge black walnut tree that fell a couple years ago on the other side of the house. I’ll go with black walnut!

I felled the 1st tree with the 660 and bucked the big stuff. Then limbed with my 026. Then Went to the 460 (the saw in the pic) and felled and bucked tree 2. Forgot how much I like running the 460 with 25”. Great balance and really ripped through those 20-25” rounds!

Buzzsaw, hows the 460 pull a 36” bar/chain. I’m thinking about getting a 36” for my 660, but not sure I want to spring $150 for a bar and chain that I won’t use that often

I think it does okay. It does nt fly like with a 28" bar thru 24" wood, but it doesnt struggle either. Keep in mind ive only run it maybe 4-5 times since September of 2018 when i bought it to fell a 37" stump white oak. The guy i did the job for offered to pay for half of a longer bar. I had the 20 &28" bars only. Wanted to fell the tree in one swath.
I got the Laser one pictured bar and chain for $110 new on ebay i think. I really wanted OEM but i hear ya on price for something i wont use that often. IMG_0495.JPG
34" Norway maple trunk i bucked back in June. If you have a 660 then go for it. Should pull it without a problem, no? Keep in mind my saw is stock. May get it ported in the future. Maybe used 36" Stihl bar on ebay? Bought a decent used 20" bar from ebay. IMG_0494.JPG

I've got a 36" 3/8 .50 ga. set up for my 660 & it pulls it fine. I put a 28" .404 .63ga. bar, chain, & sprocket on for working on log decks & man does that work nice! Unless you really need the long bar I wouldn't spend the coin.

Yep, it’s going to be highly valuable firewood in a couple years!
