Fixed my handheld controller on the winch last night. Real fun because Superwinch is in the middle of a takeover and you can’t buy parts. Had to buy a 3 wire handheld from Warne and cobble it together. Of course none of the wires are color coded the same. Lots of permutations. Loaded up my white oak. Ready to bring it to the sawmill and turn it into bridge decking. Whoohoo. Seperate question. I know to air dry lumber you stick it and weight. I’m not concerned with drying. What happens if you leave the sticks out? Will it curl up or something crazy?
It’ll be going on the bridge sometime this winter. It can dry then I’m not looking to build pretty. Just an ATV bridge. Hoping for one screw per plank so it can move around without splitting in half. We’ll see about that though. Some of these logs are quite twisted grain. Little scared of that already.
Nice that its fixed. Now you can hoard up a storm again! Keep us posted on how the milling goes and bridge build.
Ah yes, using for a bridge. Then I'd highly suggest you sticker it. Otherwise you have a couple things against you. First is mold and second is warping. If you are using this for a bridge, I don't think you will be happy with an up and down bridge. It will give you a bouncing action and that alone will be very hard on the bridge and you may end up rebuilding it much sooner than you wish. Also, when you do get the bridge built, I suggest you always cross that bridge slowly especially with a load. Otherwise, again, that bridge may not hold up very long.
First bridge I ever built out of 5/8” pine strips I brought home from a job. When I was done with it I set it on the floor and walked across it. Was for a train track that I never built. Got it done. There’s a few pieces of firewood on top. Few pieces intermingled in the stacks too. But for the most part we got some nice 2” decking stock. It is the warping I’m worried about. Sawyer seems to think most of the wood was dead standing long enough it should be settled into position. I’m not so sure about that. I remember what happened to the cherry I used to build the house. Whacko!! We didn’t cut any stickers. I’ll be trying it without. Best thing is to just get it done ASAP. Sunday’s, when the hunters arent here. Hopefully the snow holds off for a month LOL
Yes I’ve seen that post. Just took another walk back there,,,,,no atv this time. Three different places to cross. All with their own drawbacks and pluses. Decisions decisions.
Cross stack your planks on a flat surface & they'll probably be ok. 3X3X3 etc. Can't wait to see pics of the bridge.
