Do you get bigger rounds often? We have a good system for those... Quick fix #1 The first one is a simple platform made from 2 pieces of 2x8x24 with 3 pieces of 5/4 x 15 deck boards screwed underneath to hold it together, set up behind the splitter foot. Make sure it is slightly taller than the Spurs and the round will slide on. Better fix #2 We have had the metal platform for several years. It's 1 1/2" pipe welded to 2x2x1/4 angle iron. The rounds slide on it pretty good. We have used it with rounds over 40"...yes it's still work, but easier.
We had that problem too, so we use the platform at the back of the splitter foot and then I found some heavy duty wheel chocks in front of the tires keeps it pretty stable. Give that a try.
have you tried to section big rounds with the Isocore? I was able to half 30"+ red oak rounds with the X27 over the summer and was sectioning them last week at my roadside score (24"+ white oak rounds) with the Isocore. Maybe five whacks maximum.
Here is a better view of how that platform helps, sorry it's a little long. That is our older splitter, 25 ton, 30+ sec cycle time. The new splitter where I'm stacking the quarters has 11 sec cycle time. Faster finish processing...
I have attacked big rounds like that before with mauls with success but ever since I got the hydraulics I have felt the need to use them I guess. With all the “buzz” about the isocore lately I’m thinking I may need to ask Santa for one of those this year! I go through phases with my splitting tools and currently I have been using my granafors bruk splitting maul when I do decide to hand split (mostly for shorter sessions where I don’t feel like pulling out the big heavy hydraulic splitter). The GB is a beautiful and very capable tool but I doubt it packs as much punch as the Isocore. For starters the gransfors only has a 31” handle I believe so it is super accurate but prob. does not generate the swing speed like the 36” iso. Also I think it’s about 2lbs lighter in the head.
Wow! Great video T.Jeff Veal !!!! And even greater splitting setup! I like that u have the fan set up and that chisel tipped pry bar looks perfect for prying apart and separating the those initial halves that have a tendency to want to stay together. Thanks ! I definitely need to build some type of platform.
I was just thinking to make the huge rounds more manageable to get to the splitter. I guess i take for granted i can take my "splitter" anywhere i need it whether the Isocore or X27 axe.
Thanks, that pry/chop bar is made from another piece of 1 1/2" pipe with a 1/2 x 3 1/2 x 6 flat bar stock welded into the end and ground sharp.
