yew wood was prized as stems for boats because of its denseness and strength In Olde England, the yeomen who were known for their abilities with a bow used yew wood for making bows.
Many still today prize yew for making long bows. I've known many fellows who have made bows and they all praise it.
Oh, as an aside, I also found that yellowjackets also like the berries. Killed that group as well as two large queens.
A hoarder should know their species. don’t make and “ash” out of “yew”. It could be embarrassing. yuck yuck
Great discovery. Wonder how long it would take to get to tree size? Did you count the growth rings? I have some growing in front of the house. Gonna run out and throw some Miracle grow on them now!
I saved a few rounds of a yew that was cut down a few years ago. Been sitting out in the open on a pallet and still as solid as the day it was cut. Am saving the bigger pieces for the woodshop. Probably tool handles and inlay work. The base of the tree and largest round is probably 14" across.
I have heard the same thing about using yew for bows. I have one tree on my property, about 12" diameter and 14' to the first limb. I will be cutting it into a couple bow blanks before I sell my house in a few months.
