My son's first 2-fer took place on youth day this year. It was the last Sat in Sept. I should have shared these a month ago... Both harvests were with his Savage .243. This Doe was from the morning stand and was his longest shot ever, on game, at 189 yards. The buck was an evening stand harvest, and was one of three bucks that slowly came in. It was more exciting for us as there were also 3 does pretty close. So I was actually guiding him with instructions on when he could move based on none of the 6 close deer having their heads up, etc. Taken at 25 yards. He is 13 this year, so we only have 2 more of these youth day hunts left. They have become my favorite day in the field, and I can't even carry a weapon! I'll share one more on here, from his very first youth day hunt. This one was with an iron sighted Winchester model 94 in 30-30. 27 yards, and it only took 1 step. He has harvested quite a few deer inbetween, and they all have special memories. But, this was a great hunt too. I remember him whispering, "Dad, I can hear my heartbeat!" Some of the best advice I have ever heard is take a kid hunting and fishing. And we can add, firewooding!
Very cool. I didn’t grow up hunting, and actually don’t have that much of an interest, but my 13 y/o son does. He got into archery a bit a couple years ago and started talking about wanting to bow hunt. We have a family friend who is willing to take him. So this past spring my wife and I took the licensing class with our son. It was a fun day. Hopefully he will get out sooner than later. He’s a pretty busy kid, so we will just have to see what happens. Congrats again! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
These are the moments when you wish you could stop time, but, keep those memories forever alive in your heart. Never to be replicated, son's grow up, become men, and then, the Good Lord willing they cycle starts all over again with maybe a grandson, or grand daughter. Hold on to him tight, keep that father / son thing going for as long as you can. Enjoy it to its fullest. Great pictures, take a lot more of them.
That’s awesome! Thanks for sharing. My kids are 18mo, 4.5, and 6 Can’t wait to teach them to hunt also
Congratulation young man or Waidmannsheil like we say overhere. Looks like the Freezer is packed and a "small" trophy also came along with it.
Nice! Ohio's youth gun season is this coming weekend. My youngest has been bow hunting with my brother, but the oldest prefers rifle season. I'm looking forward to it.
Blinds are set. Going to bed early tonight. Update in morning, hoping to be posting pics of my youngest's first deer.
Youngest got his first deer. 30-35 yds, .44 Mag Marlin 7:44am, great shot placement. Took out lung and spine, must have deflected upwards.
This past weekend was youth season in Ohio I am grateful for the chance for the youngsters to get the first crack at the firearms season. Both the boys made quick kills and we are as spoiled with fresh meat as we are firewood life is good. We are blessed to have a great spot to hunt together!
