Finally got around to bucking up the locust I scored last year about this time. Nice green happy holidays type sawdust.
    Start splitting tomorrow.

NICE! Is that your first experience with locust Joe? What are your thoughts/opinion?

Well, it seems to take the keen edge off a chain pretty fast. Had the 361 and 550 out there. They both need a sharpening by the end. Splits easy enough. I did a few rounds the other day not in the pics. Hoping to get a cord out of it,,,,maybe.
Chances are high I’ll take a few of the dryer cookies and chunks in the house. Cook em by the stove for a few weeks and get a taste of what all the fuss is about ;)

You can tell you source logs and cut to your own length. Those stacks look so nice and even. My scrounges come in all sorts of lengths. I try to shoot for 16”, but reality means splits in my stacks might range from 12-20”. Nice work.

That stack is scrounged ash. For some reason it stacks nicer. It was mostly logs tho. You are right. While most of my stacks are stuff from the woods all the stuff coming up is logs I pilfered from the side of the road. Was lucky enough to hit a sweet spot. Just cut the trunks off until you hit a branch and move on to the next. Should make some pretty straight splits.
Also this year I’ve started measuring. Makes sense if you have logs. Have a tape with 16-18” measurements marked out. Whatever leaves the smallest cookie wins.
Did mess up the measurement on the big one in the foreground. Not sure what happened there. Looks like I got a 14”. I’m not tossing no locust in the scrap pile though. I’m saving every sliver.

Got a nice truckload of locust split today. Still some more to go. Figuring 1 3/8 cord by the time I’m done. Should be some nice heat.
Last pic is some of the oak logs left to go. Plenty more where those came from. Just was trying to get a pic of the new dog. He’s coming around from a city dog to a country boy. Found his first gut pile yesterday the little maggot. A rite of passage I suppose. 9DBAAD2C-9813-40B3-88C2-59C0495EA4E9.jpeg 72659D36-3622-41BA-BE27-03BD543FA981.jpeg 498FF8FE-E884-467C-9C4D-BD6E4464208C.jpeg

Ash and locust hard to beat. Take that all day long!!
Locust loves to beat up chains. But its more than worth it in my book.
Your pup is probably in heaven out there with you. Gut piles, dead critters, deer chit, doesnt get any better.

Nice splitter! Is that a 35 ton? I have a 28 ton splitter from Dirty Hand Tools. Thing is a BEAST! That’s a Colorado company. I drove to the factory to buy mine. I got to pick it out from rows and rows of them. Kinda like going to a new car lot. Very exciting. Great splitters.

amazing watching the transformation of that little guy. When I first got him he wouldn’t enter a tree line or the taller grass in the field. Heck a tall piece of grass touch him he’d jump in the air in fright. Extreme separation anxiety too. Couldn’t be left alone at all.
He’s coming around. It’s slow but he’s coming around. I like that he sticks close but yesterday he must have got a whiff and did some tracking.
First time I’ve ever had ash or locust. Can’t wait to try them out. I’m burning a few chunks of ash already from the scrap pile. I know I shouldn’t but I had to move them and it seemed easier to move them into the house ;)

its a 28 like yours. I bought it because of all the rave reviews.
Sorry to say it’s been a nightmare. Good news is the warranty was good and the folks in Colorado were very nice. Replaced almost everything on it the first year. Second ram is leaking now but the warranty is up. I’ll run it till it croaks.
Assembled in Colorado with Chinese parts ;)
Couple of tips. Watch the welds, watch the hose connections and be careful with the four way wedge. If you use it in the upmost position and get a split wedged under it it may not clear the strippers. Tears things up good.
May want to check your love joy too. I’m not the only one who’s found out they can be a little loose from the factory. Makes a nice bang when they let go. Good luck, hopefully I just got the bad lemon in the bunch.

Yikes!! Sorry to hear that! Mine’s been rock solid. I’ve probably put 200+ cords through it so far. I did replace the cylinder once. But I consider that my fault. I split about 8 cords of super dry 5 foot wide cottonwood with it. I was overworking it’s 28 ton capacity. The good news is, I drove to the factory and exchanged it for a new one at no charge. Thanks for the heads up, buddy! I’ll give em an earful for ya, next time I’m there!

glad to hear it. I’d rather it just be me.
It’s been two or three years now since the warranty was up but it was a little funny. They knew me right away whenever I called. “Joe! What’d ya break now”?
Like I said the warranty was good,,,,while it lasted. No questions, no BS, no runaround just tell us what you want and we’ll send it. I was quite surprised at that. Expected a lot more resistance. They always answered the phone even LOL

Really nice load of locust and pile of oak logs. We have some we have to process before they get to bad.

What town in Colorado was that. Did they have any accessories. I’d like to get a 4way wedge if they are available

It’s the bustling metropolis of Westminster. I don’t recall seeing accessories. But the place is enormous. I wouldn’t be surprised at what they have laying around.
