Put a couple hours in this morning to taking down three standing dead red cedars out back and then cutting up my roadside scrounge pile. Need this pile to grow significantly. Buzzsaw, can you please send those Asplundh crews back up here? Lewis Tree crews have been cutting a little bit nearby but they’ve had a hauling truck waiting behind the bucket trucks to pick up the wood immediately. Asplundh never did that from what I saw. It’s like a mini heart ache when I drive by thinking I’ll get a little something to throw in the truck but then see all the wood is gone. Time to break out the Granberg mill again on the cedar. Recently sold the last boards from the cedar I milled last winter. Work friend of my wife’s bought a nice piece for a shelf.
Very pretty. I wish I could smell it to see how it differs from the smell of our cedar. It looks like that stack is a temporary home. Do you use something underneath your stacks to get them out of the dirt?
For the cedar logs I just threw them on top of a couple pieces of gnarly apple wood to keep them off the ground
Just started with the Alaskan mill last winter. Still learning it. Plan to mill all this cedar. But I burn cedar as well. Burns hot. Pops a ton. Smells nice in the firewood shed. Supposedly keeps the mice away.
I wish i could send them up there for ya. You are more than welcome to come down here and we'll cut a nice load together for you. I cant imagine the heartache knowing what was there is now gone. Have you stopped and asked for the wood? Are you close by? Can they dump at your place? Have you tried to "bribe" them with beer, coffee, donuts etc. Im not one for bribery but hey this is firewood we're talking about. If the wind blows in the right direction i can smell that cedar from here. I still have my lengths of it untouched in my PA. Have thought about getting a mill. Nice work BTW!
Dang. That cedar is gorgeous. I stumble upon cedar here once in a while. Burns good. Smells even better.
I’ve stopped and asked home owners if they are planning to keep roadside felled wood in their yards but have never stopped and asked a cutting crew. Can you do that?? Haha. I guess I never really thought to ask the crews. I would just keep in mind where they were cutting and try to swing by later on. Worked for a long time but the crews have moved on mostly. But like I mentioned, Lewis Tree has been on the other side of town taking down some old maples on a back road stretch heading into the center of town. They’re not leaving anything behind. Not even the branches. Don’t they know the pain they’re causing!?
Cant say ive ever seen a private tree service take wood around here. Maybe its part of their contract terms? Prior to this Asplundh hoarding gold mine i would "discover" a pile of fresh cut wood from a tree removal roadside and load what i could as is. As my hoarding sickness has gotten worse in the last few years ive become more proactive and will ask away so far as knocking on doors, CS roadside, park and process in yards etc. Most of the time with success. Let me know how you make out.
