Drove by this yesterday. Very fresh Asplundh cutting. Wasnt there on Sunday. On the way back i stopped to check it out. Bark sure looks like it. Had to look at twigs. I think its elm. Didnt take any. Sorry Horkn Third pic branch still attached. Next pic was some tupelo aka black gum nearby. Recently learned about that on here and in person. Drove away with an empty truck, disappointed. Went to my friends and split a half cord of white oak and hickory to cheer myself up. Maybe ill cut a round and see how it splits. Ive split green fresh cut elm rather easily in the Winter.
What is wrong with Elm? I've never had any myself. BTU's seem to be half decent, in line with Ash. Is it just difficult to process?
That doesn't look like the elm we have here. Do a sample buck to split. See if it splits easy or not.
I base my scrounging on ease of splitting as i do it by hand and elm can be/is very stringy. Ask anyone here. I may cut a round and try splitting roadside. I remember several years ago handsplitting frozen elm and it was rather easy. I have access to oak and hickory so will give those priority.
Elm can be really tough to split. buZZsaw BRAD is a masochist and splits with an axe. Splitting elm with an axe usually ends up with a lot of cuss words and no pieces of firewood. I like elm, because it's plentiful here, it burns great, and you can generally find dead standing elm that is barkless, and ready to burn. It throws nice heat and GREAT secondary and ghost flames in a tube epa stove. Speaking of which I'll look for some. I know there's 3 dead standing barkless elm trees at my wood lot. One huge one needs to wait till the corn is harvested, then it's an easy drop in the farm field, and the other 2 decent sized ones will test my felling accuracy.
Elm is tough to split by hand but i love burning it. Even pia with a splitter its so stringy, similar to shagbark hickory stringy but 10 times worse. Elm usually has a dark center though no????
they do have the dark center, but i think you are right as the dark heartwood is a lot bigger. Maybe different variety???
dammit, now im too curious and have a mission this afternoon. The inquiring FHC folks need to know too! Humming the mission impossible theme!
One good thing about elm is that you will not run out of kindling anytime soon after a splitting session.
If that was Elm, it would have to be American/soft Elm, which should have a nasty odor when green. Most people equate it to Horse pizz. You sure it isn't one of the variants of Hickory?
