I know many ppl hate the flippy caps but I've always had good luck with them. until yesterday i broke my oil fill cap on my 460 it musta had some built up dust in the cap or user error or something but it snapped off. biggest thing I learned is that outside of the internet forum, no one I met has ever heard the term "flippy cap". the stihl dealer even asked me what it was. my wood burning friends just call them caps. I've been using the term flippy cap for 10-15 years or so. do you know ppl that call them flippy caps outside of the internet world?
I have always called them flippy caps and even though I have heard a lot of non sense about them I like them. They always go on and off easy.
flippy caps online, tool-less caps at the store dumb flippy caps by anyone who knew how to use the scrench to remove a screw cap. course, needing an off switch that auto-resets to the on position seems to be catering to the not-so-bright as well. But I'm not paying to keep operators on the help line either.
I haven't ever had issues with the Stihl flippy caps, but I much prefer Husqvarna version. The Stihl version have a recessed lip that seem to trap contaminates. With the Husqvarna version they stay much cleaner, and are easy to clean debris when opening.
i dont and heard the term here. I have trouble once in a while with mine. The gas will leak on my 460. Had a little trouble getting the oil cap on the 261 the other day. Never had an issue with the old screw on caps.
Is there an option to replace them with a traditional cap? I never have and issue with my fuel cap on my MS250. The oil cap can be a challenge at times. There are days where it takes me what seems like forever to seat. I have to be really mindful of not filling the oil too close to the top.
same here. Ive always thought the oil cap should be more clear of the handle. At times a little tricky to get on and even fill with oil. I hear you on the filling up. Seems i like to literally "top it off" and end up with a spill. Been trying to break that habit. Hey Skier76 have you been to the compost center lately? Months back the guy there told me his company lost the contract and a new one coming in. Wondering if the new one will let me take wood.
Have two Stihls with flippy caps. Do not like them. My 025 had the old style caps and worked great. Cracked the case and had to replace it, ended up with flippy's on it now. Grrrrr!
No problems with mine on the 460 Stihl . I don’t mind them , need to be careful not to fill the oil one to full or it can be a mess is all . I have a Husky arborist saw that has the traditional caps , location of them is a big pain in the azz!
I have called them flippy caps since they came out on Stihl outdoor equipment in the 90's. Have disliked them since then too. They're better with E free fuel for sure, but seem over complicated to me. Stihl was handing them out free for a long time due to leaking with E 10 fuels. They seem awfully "fiddly" to get seated & closed properly. If you can't run a scrench you probably shouldn't be running a saw. Got two saws with em & ten without. Less leaking & spills on the screw caps. Maybe I'm just not smart enough to run them lol.
I'm still not sure what problem they solved. The old screw-on ones never seemed problematic. Anyone who has a problem with them is a dumb-azz until you get one that goes cattywumpus on you and the damm thing won't sit right for love or money. Then you join the group of people who hates them.
Am I missing something about the flippy caps? I have had the same ones on my 20 plus year old ms390 with no issues whatsoever, assuming I have what you are talking about where half folds up to grip to unscrew right?
There are aftermarket flippy caps available that aren’t flippy and don’t come “unclocked”. definitive dave may know if he’ll have some available soon or if there are other reputable brands
I haven't been there for ages! And probably won't be for a bit since that tree took out my trailer! That's interesting that a new company is coming in. Definitely keep us posted on how that pays out.
