I was unstacking wood this afternoon and find a mouse nest. Not unusual. Few splits later a couple of them under a split startled me as they were almost eye level. Two had ran into the woods and i found this one later on under another split. Surprised i got it by the tail as they are usually fast. I HAD to show Ms. buZZsaw. Bad idea! She's been on the chair for two hours now and wont get off. (not really but thats funny) I wanted to show the cat. "Free range & non GMO" I explained. GF wasnt having any of it! I let it go back in the woods. "Taters" our 18lb flabby tabby!
Wow, the cat turned down a free range mouse...hmmm, the house must be nice and comfy. Thanks for sharing
Didnt show the cat. He is indoor and loves watching critters from the back door and the slider by the deck. He has gone face to face with a raccoon with only the glass separating them. Rare occasions he sneaks out.
I only see them in the house, garage, or pump house at this time of year, it is pretty cold out there. The traps have been pretty productive, and I think I have gotten all of them in the house and pump house.
That's one of the reasons that I don't move the wood up to the house til we've had a couple good freezes. I get enough rodents in the house without setting up a high rise staging area nearby. I set the d-con on to the sill plates early October. and spend the next month or so scooping up carcasses.
Glad you survived the close encounter. Once you back a wild animal like that into a corner, there's no telling what the outcome could be!
It was the most vicious mouse ive ever encountered. Thought it might be rabid! Kept rearing its fangs, snarling and growling at me. Tried to rip the glove right off my hand. I almost crapped my pants too! Im afraid to go to sleep tonight. Could be plotting with his buddies against me as i type! Gonna have the cat next to me to "stand" guard.
Here’s a couple pics of my run ins this summer. They were on the same day. I was digging post holes for the new wood shed. Found a bunch of baby mice or chipmunks, or something similar in one of my rubber top covers that had been folded up on the ground. Then later, while digging a hole, hit a skunk den a pulled out 2 baby skunks in the same scoop with the post hole digger. I jumped when I saw those fall out in the dirt. And the smell came with it. That day and the next were quite an adventure. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Did you get skunk smell on you? Had one let go in my garage years back. Lots of crushed charcoal and baking soda was my improvision to rid the smell. Wasnt a large blast of spray luckily.
Should of let the Taters eat it. A high protein low carb diet might bring the 18lbs down to 15 or so.
I was all for feeding it to the cat, her no. I used to feed them to my other cat years ago. He used to be outdoor cat years back and did hunt as we are surrounded by woods. Lots of chipmunks. He snuck out last year, unbeknown to us and we find him at the back door, chipmunk in mouth.
I understand where your coming from. I caught a live mouse in the house and didn’t want to go outside so I flushed it down the crapper. Apparently that was wrong of me and I’m cruel. Heck, it would of met certain death if I walked outside with it too.
I've got a couple of them in the stacks, better out there than inside! About a month ago had one in the garage, traps get him quick. Two weeks ago I was blowing out the kids tree house, saw a nest up in the rafters, thought it was a vacant birds nest, blew it right out the back of the tree house. Bit later I see mom just sitting there on the ground with 4 babies attached to her, I guess the nest wasn't vacant after all. One is in the wood shed for sure, my son left his little work gloves in it. Other day he came running to me "Dad I got holes all in my gloves".......Looks like his gloves are the source material for somebody's nest. Am sure I'll come across that sometime during the winter when pulling splits.
