I went out today with my forest service firewood cutting permit looking to get some quaking aspen but came upon a small grove of nice Douglas firs that the forest service had already cut down for me. I couldn’t believe my luck. Douglas fir in my neck of the woods is second only to oak which is scarce. Ok well, maybe third depending who you ask. But I really like the stuff and none of it was punky or rotted and it was not only near the road, it was UPHILL from the road. So all I had to do was cut some 18” rounds and roll them down to the road letting gravity do all the dirty work for me. Then I just backed up the truck and loaded up! There was so much I couldn’t get it all but did get two truck loads. I have a small bed because it’s a crew cab so I will be back for more other days if no one else gets it first!
Nice score. In my neck of the woods, we would take Doug Fir all day...... and grateful for it. It's good wood.
That's a great score!!! I'd love to come across something like that. I get excited if I find a lodgepole stache let alone Douglas fir!!!

Great score! Three thumbs up! I had a similar experience several years back. Bucking a fallen tree on a steep rocky hillside. Just roll em down to the trail. Well, a few kept going and into the small river on the bottom of the other hill!
If it smells like the lumber department at HD, you've hit pay dirt! I'm with you, second only to oak.
What do you got? I've got a crew cab 08 F350. No tarps with it, but 99% of the wood I get goes into the 10k dump trailer.
I inherited my brother's '08 Tacoma crew cab a very years back. I loved that truck. It was my every day driver but I sold it last year as we didn't need 3 cars. The "big truck" as my kids call it, does all the pulling and hauling for us so it stayed with us. Tacoma are great trucks!!!
Super score! Excellent firewood and a great day outdoors. Doug is my favorite with Madrone second. I don't imagine you have that there though. A mix of Doug Fir and a good hardwood is about as good as you can get!
Don't get me wrong, I burn Quaking Aspen too. But it can be smelly. And i will pass right by it for the Douglas Fir.
Not dissing it at all but I hear ya on the smelly part. Cottonwood has a little bit of this problem, not super smelly but it has tended to have a pee smell to it depends though..
Nice score. I will often get wood up hill from the road but never down hill. Doug fir is a great burning wood and I try to get as much of it in my stacks as possible.
