When I'm out on my bike, always looking....for anything.
Big elm limb broke off. 1 mile from my house. People finally home today.
Said yes, take it. I did.

The bigger part of the limb was spalted….but still in pretty good shape....I hope.
Noodled the big crotch piece and it is mostly spalted.
Hope to get some boxes out of it.

Said she is planning on bringing down the whole tree.
Gave her my number to call when she does.
    A piece here a piece there......pretty soon it's a pile.

Nice score  Mebbe you can start the "bike hoarding" thread! But that means bringing wood home on the bike! :quad::tree:

That elm cross section does look very pretty.

Nice score! I love saving chunks of spalted/tiger striped wood. I have a loft full of curly maple chunks, curly cherry, burled walnut, etc. I used some of my tiger striped maple on these draw knives I forged a while back. 20180215_162621.jpg

Beautiful wood and metal! May I ask what metal you forged the blades from?

    Old Jeep leaf spring steel......
Tempered them and they seemed to hold a good edge. I'm going to build more someday, if I ever get my forge back up and running...

Finally got out on my bike after a week of snow and ice.
About a mile from home on one of my standard routes....
nice pile of wood. Mix of ponderosa/russian olive/spruce.
Old, mostly just wet from the snow storm.
    IMG_2684.JPG
Got it unloaded and stacked. Some will have to be cut to length. No biggie.

Started getting some splint. So nice to get to do some real fire wood work.
    IMG_2690.JPG
and getting the porch stacked. Nice.
    IMG_2691.JPG
Rare to see russian olive this big, so I saved a couple of
the big pieces. May find a couple of boxes in there.

Very grateful for this bounty....however it is presented.

I’m a mtb guy, but I love the carbon road bikes. Great weather for riding here. 80s. Good hauls of wood too! Win-win.

Great ride! I'm still using an Ulterga triple group. I guess I'm just old. I don't care for range on the new compact doubles. I run an XT triple on my Surly Disc Trucker touring bike. My wife and I quit counting miles at 175K. No better way to see the world.

I rode Ultegra triple for years on my Trek 5000. I moved it over to the 5500 when
the BB failed and Trek replaced the frame w/the 5500 frame. In '17, after the
accident I finally switched over to the compact crank. I didn't want to do it, but
they don't make the replacement gears anymore. I'm glad I did. No problems finding
a comfy gear on either end.

Cycling is life, the rest is just details.

Spalted, for framing guys it means rotten, for turning guys it means pay extra for the extra detail in the wood!!
