Ah yes, but if you remember, there was negative press on our generation too until we became "the man".
I was taught if your taking more than 2 steps hit the brake. Full wrap of your left hand, meaning dont rest your thumb on top and always keep your left arm locked.
YES. Im 51. Looks like the average age of a FHC member is late 40's. If so im above average! Did you change your avatar pic Marvin ?
You're a generation older than mine, but just barely. About the only bad press on gen x'ers was our clothing and music choices . Now we're the man while most of the boomers are retiring.
I'm at the tail end of gen-x. Anyone younger than me are punks. Then again, some of the folks from my high school class (still alive) that I thought were going to be in prison are mostly upstanding members of society. It's the overachievers that have become "the bad kids". Sent from my LML212VL using Tapatalk
I wish i had someone teach me anything about chain saws. All of my skills are pretty much self taught. Looking back, my late father and uncle were not very safe with a saw.
I'm still teaching myself this. The guys that taught me made it seem like it was an emergency thing and ruined the chain/clutch to use it. Sent from my LML212VL using Tapatalk
Ya i feel privileged to have worked with this guy, i think he was born with a saw in his hand. One time i cut the rope with the saw and he made me wear a braided rope ponytail on my hardhat for a week. It was hilarious i have to admit. Good times i could go on forever, hes s good friend to this day.
Talked about it with brother and dropped white birch that was broken.. cleaned up pine about 1.5 cord of SS wood to be split and stacked..
I’m with you Brad. No one ever taught me how to use a saw, I just did it. Although I know my habit with the brake has been a bad one. And I know I need to be extra careful; my family lineage is not the best with outdoor power tools. My father’s older brother ran a lawn mower over his foot while going up a small hill backwards. Apparently that was pretty gruesome according to my dad. And his younger brother put an axe right into his foot while splitting wood. Apparently that was pretty gruesome too. I’m at the tail end too. I’ll be 41 at the end of December. My birthday info in the app is purposely wrong. But I have a sister 3 years older than me and then a brother and two sisters that are 8, 11, and 14 years younger than me. My mom has always commented to me how it is like we truly grew up in different generations, even though we were raised in the same house. Different values, different outlook on life, different ability to overcome life’s challenges. I am always in awe at the drama in my sister’s lives. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Thanks for posting this thread Canadian border VT as well as the follow up. Lots of good advice and information shared here. I have to admit, I've thought of the chain brake as a safety device for kickback events, and seldom engage it unless putting the saw down. I'll be mindful of the advice shared here. As a side note, I had a case of negligent cutting about 3 weeks ago. Was dropping an ash, w/BIL as a spotter. Made the face cut, and got bar pinched on the back cut. Fortunately I now have wedges and unstuck the saw, but when I examined things, possibly because of slope, or just lapse of attention, the back cut was about 3/4" below the hinge point. With a fresh back cut above the hinge, things worked much better. Still learning.
Every tree is different. Wind can affect a drop too. There's so many factors and some you can't even see.
Take it from a "baby boomer generation", take each day as it is and do what you can with it. Those younger than you and those older than you should be doing the same. I'm 72, my body seems older.(I hate mirrors.) My mind feels younger until I forget a name or can't remember things unless I write them down. I've seen so many co workers say that they will it was the weekend, or a few hours later. I remind them not to wish their life away. You never know what the next hour or day may have in store for you.
