I have 90% Chestnut Oak fere....its related to the White Oak family....however it smells?....i dont mind it...
This past spring I picked up a load of 30”+ pin oak rounds. I didn’t have time to SS right away so they sat on my trailer in the driveway for maybe a week or two..... my wife complained every single day that the mud stuck on the bark of the rounds was actually dog poop! She begged me every day to get rid of the wood ‘.... like I would ever do that haha. Anyway, she was right in that those rounds really did smell like chit. None of the other red oak I have processed has ever smelled that way. Definitely don’t mind the normal red oak smell but I see how some could make an argument.
Not just related, it's in the white oak group. All oaks are in the same "family" . It's Fagaceae which is actually the Beech family. There is no "oak" family. Edit: the family is not Hipsteraceae?? This being a site about wood, I don't think it's wise to edit out and miscorrect actual scientific names of wood. I know what you mean, and you may even know what I am saying. okay here goes. First group of pics my main processing area. Half cord racks of red oak...four deep 2 cord two half cord racks of random hardwood, now 3 cord four more half cord racks mixed hardwood, now 5 cords same stack view from right side Stack of ash in back, beech shorties in front. About another cord. Now 6 cords immediately to its left another triple row of half cord stacks each. Now 7.5 cords immediately to the left another triple row of half cord each. Now 9 cords. immediately to the left two bins of nuggets and chunkies another cord and a half. Add another half cord for the uncut pile in front. Now 11 cords. Another half cord of shorties. Some have fallen behind tree. Now 11.5 cords immediately to the left another single half cord rack. They are 10' x nearly 5' high inside dimensions. Measured half cords. Now 12.5 cords. behind this stack three truckfulls of hickory rounds another cord and a half. Now 14 cords. immediately to the left is a 4 cord stack of oak splits 4'x5'x28' approx. Now 18 cords. In front add another half cord oak splits, half cord of hickory rounds, half cord of nuggets/chunkies. Now 19.5 cords. Next pic cord and a half 4'x4'x16' not full. Now 21 cords behind that is a half cord of shorties. Now 21.5 cords Red elm and sugar maple splits tarped plus several beech rounds not seen. Another half cord. Now 22 cords About a half cord of longs 20-22" Now 22.5 cords. On the other side of this stack three rows or red oak ready for splitting. The two pallets are 3'x8' for scale Another two cords. Now 24.5 cords. Immediately to the left of these another half cord red oak splits Now 25 cords behind this oak is another half cord not pictured and immediately to the left is a double row half cord each. Now 26.5 cords Also not pictured is another half cord stack red maple longs and at least a half cord of shorties. Now 27.5 cords Next three pics are very recent splitting red maple and ash. Another two cords splits and rounds. Now 29.5 cords. There are some mounds of nuggets and uncut logs so it is safe to say there is 30 cord in my main processing area. Next group of pics is at my house right up the hill from here. Half cord bin nuggets far left. Double stack 16'x4' 4 face cords. Second diagonal brace is another half cord bin sugar maple nuggets, next to that (under blue tarp)is a half cord of sugar maple. Entire stack say 2.75+ cords. Immediately in back on that stack two more half cord stacks red maple. now 3.75 cords Mound of sugar maple splits plus rounds and logs to be processed. Another two cords. Now 5.75 cords. Behind the house another 1.75 cords. Now 7.5 cords plus the 30 equals 37.5 cords. Note Ms. buZZsaw having a smoke. Next group of pics is wood stored at a friends about ten minutes from me. First pic is of 4x4x16 two cords each so six cords. Pic from April next two pics is the same three stacks filled in between. Another four cords. Ten plus cords there now. The space between the second and third has been filled in maybe 2/3. Older pic. Next pic current as of last week. So 30 + 7.5 + 10 is 47.5 cords. I could be off a cord either way, but i almost always make my racks sized to fit either half or full cord. I like to have a pretty good running tally moresnow
I drove in with a load of wood the other day. Shes exclaims "WTF"!? I responded "in back of the truck" Where's The Firewood! Actually she has been giving me that look for the nearly 13 years we've been together moresnow ! Send her a sympathy card!
Red oak smell has never bothered me or the anyone in the family so I don't have much on that front but the smell of white oak is something. Around here it smells like dill weed but I hear in NY it smells like vanilla. Preferance for me is red oak; pin oaks are what are plentiful on my property so free, close and easy splitting with my maul.
