There is someone with a bigger farm type tractor. Saw him in one yard a month ago (same one that had the tupelo) I had grabbed the oak smalls as is. The lady would not allow me use the saw. I drove by and he was there with straps etc lifting a trunk. Only time ive ever saw him. One other road, i had left behind some big logs, gnarlies and those have all gone including some big oak on an embankment too. Dunno if it was him.
Then there is the 80 yr old Portugese man. I drove by there yesterday and it was all gone. "Problem" with this is right next to the curb which will deter the competition. I asked to park in the driveway until im ready to load which is good as its close to a busy intersection. Ive seen a couple other guys, but with small PU's and grabbing/cutting the smalls.

Maybe you can still find plenty of wood. It would be great if you could beef up your ladder rack and install a winch setup like jo191145 has on his dump trailer. Then you could load logs like that when the homeowner doesn't want you to use the saw.

Well it stopped raining and i decided to go cut at what i secured yesterday. I park, mark a couple logs and start cutting. No sooner finish bucking the first log and the lady comes home, yelling out the car window at me. Turns out her husband has a friend taking the wood this weekend...even the big ones. She said take what you cut. I grumbled to myself, grabbed them and left. I decided to procure their other cutting right near me. The pine from This Pine Could be Mine? thread.
They are now cutting a big sugar maple and a big stalk left so im more interested in that. All the pine is untouched. The wood is on a steep embankment with a busy road so i needed to get it from their yard. Lady was very nice. Turns out she went to school with Ms. buZZsaw. I can cut at my convenience too. Have to ask my friend if he wants to try the pine. Dont know when Asplundh will finish the cutting though? A couple more big pine stalks plus the maple still standing

If i had a nice open area to continue dumping loads of uncut logs i might consider it, but i dont so its buck and/or process, load then haul home. Very used to it as its the norm for me, and doesnt phase me in the least. I will on occasion grab uncut lengths of smaller wood, but mostly prefer to buck then load. A bit easier on the ol' back.

Ok. Just thinking of those areas where you can't cut on site.

If I let Brad play with the trailer he’ll have to buy a house ;) :)
We really should get together one day and I’ll show you how the buttons work. I could use some of Brads enthusiasm to rub off and I’d bet he’d get a kick out of snatch and go hoarding. It’s a lot like those tv shows where they repo cars LOL
Back up, hook it, winch and drive away. :)

This is the same lady that said take all you want? That’s lousy. I had a woman in the neighborhood pull something similar this summer. Power company dropped a Beech for her that she had really been hounding them about, but they wouldn’t take the wood for her. She explained all this to me when I stopped to ask about the wood. She fails me that I was welcome to take it. Two days later she tells me her son in law wanted the wood, so she was going to give it to him. The entire summer goes by and it never moves. Then she leaves me a note on a Friday afternoon that her SIL took too long to get the wood, and I could have the wood but it had to be gone by Tuesday! I managed to get it. It came out to about. 1 1/2 cords once stacked. I was happy about that!

At least she let you take what you had already cut.

I only bucked one log and ready to start second which i took uncut. Maybe 12 diameter.
Thats a PITA for sure. Sometimes i feel that asking and being respectful comes back to bite you in the arse. I Shouldve just stopped and cut, but im not like that. At first she said big stuff. Then yesterday all of it and this was after a pleasant five minute conversation.
The biggest is over 24" and im wondering if it will be gone after this weekend. Not that it matters as i have access to other wood im putting off for the cold weather including some trees to fell. Asplundh still cutting in the area. Folks always want the wood until they realize the work involved.
My biggest pet peeve is when they say yes theyre keeping it and two years later it sits, in the same spot, untouched, slowly turning into compost!
Im also tempted to dress like an Asplundh worker with hard hat and safety vest. I usually am wearing one of those "glow in the dark" yellow safety shirts already. Maybe tomorrow for Halloween!

Only two buttons, in and out. I will interject no humor in that. ;)

Thinking I’m gonna go hit those white oak in the state forest tomorrow morning. Rain, no one should be around.
It’s weird, it’s a little like stealing. The state doesn’t want it. They’ll pay to truck and pay to dump instead of letting people have it for free. On the state highways they’ll let you take it but once it’s their forest they won’t. Makes no sense really.
It’s not being saved for lumber. Too many junks in the piles for that. Just leaving the tops to rot and pulling all the trunks out to burn in the bio plant.
Hell with em, I need a bridge :)

yeah I’m normally an honorable type fellow. Like you I would never take wood without asking. When it comes to the state? I don’t know,,,they screw us everyday. Sometimes a little payback is in order.
I’ll dress up like Robin Hood. Happy Halloween, trick or treat and all that jazz.
