We used huge live edge spruce slabs on my son's Eagle Scout project this past spring. They were 18' long...turned out amazing! Used these big spruce logs from a job we did.... To make this awesome lap siding.... ...and here it is stained and done!
Those particular logs were just over 8' long, and around 24" wide. With a sharp chain and good saw it takes anywhere from 8-12 mins, all depending on resin, knots, etc. It's a slow process but worth it in the end....
I absolutely love live edge siding! Used to be a big thing in this area and there are still a few of the older houses around with it. That Father/Son time is precious. Please tell your Son, he done himself proud!
I'd like that motorhome in the background! On the pine, they did a poor job of cutting the limbs off but if you take the log with no knots that would be great...if you have room.
I don’t much like live edge stuff but I gotta say that last slab is a a beaut. It would make an awesome bar, if I was still drinking-which I’m not-in my pool room if I had one - which I don’t.
Talked to the property owner today and got the okay to cut and take the pine (still undecided). There was a nice sugar maple they were working on within the tall pines and im more interested in that right now. Have to cut and load from the yard as its on a very busy road on a curve and embankment. Got a bit of history on the pines. Lady gave me a bit of the property history. They were planted in the early 1900's so well over 100 years old! May buck the biggest just to count the rings!
Thanks Brad! I'm jealous that you can pass up pine where you live. That's mostly what I burn here in CO. I actually live in Pine, CO! It burns HOT and fast. Keeps the place (and my lady) warm. I just have to clean the chimney a bit more frequently than you probably do. I can't complain. It's 8 degrees outside and 74 in the house.
I’d take it and try some big Swedish candles with em. Big enough to cut it into six pie shapes and I bet it wood be ready for next summer’s camping season
Yikes 8 degrees! Holy frostbite! 62 here and drizzle. I look at it this way. Hardwood are more than plentiful around here and if i have to exert the same amount of energy to process oak vs pine, ill take the oak. Although im tempted to cut some of the bigger pine rounds. I got permission to cut and take them this afternoon. Stay warm and hoard on!
If I lived in hardwood country I'd do the same thing, buddy. I personally love pine. But I've been burning it my entire life. I have fond memories of sitting on my dad's tailgate in the mountains here collecting firewood. Freezing my butt off, watching the elk stomp through the pines, bugling. Maybe take a few chunks of that pine for me PS - My saw in the pic is an MS 460 with 25 inch bar. It's a beast!
I have a 460 Magnum as well. Absolutely love the saw. Noodled a bunch of knotty sugar maple chunks this afternoon with it wearing a 28" bar. Got it used February of last year and honestly dont know how i made firewood without it.
Brad, some of that is pine and some is spruce. Either way, treat them the same (cut, split and DRY) and they will be good firewood.
