Any idea what this is? It’s not sassafras and it’s not like the black locust I have. Not very heavy IMO but not light either.

Looks like Black locust. Are you sure you're not just getting stronger?

I sincerely doubt it. The stronger part, not the locust part. :)

Looks like it’s got a bit of yellow to it. Any chance it is tulip poplar? I believe I’ve had some that looks very similar to that.

It resembles locust but I do not think it is. Not sure what else it may be. Split some and let's have a look at the inside

Ok here’s the story. Don’t judge me too harshly.
Sittin on the couch on an inclementy day. Bored.
Flip to CL to see if I can find some white oak logs.
First ad, no pic, but it says something about a pile of logs behind a store in Manchester. 9.3 miles away.
I’m bored, mind starts conjuring up giant stacks of beautiful logs all stacked up just waiting for rescue. Etc etc. y’all know the score, the gleam in the eye, the dreams of the big one LOL
No trailer, just going for a spin to check it out.
Just a few pieces of whatever this is. Maybe young locust? Never seen juvenile. All cut in stupid lengths.
I tossed two in the back of the truck and the ol doubt set in. What is this weed I’m tossing in the back of the truck?
I left the rest. I know I know. Almost turned around and went back once my mind cleared but I had a dinner date.
In my defense I wanted logs, preferably white oak, thick, straight, ten feet, at least 6 feet.

I ask forgiveness of the forum.

I can tell it's hardwood, whatever it is. Hardwood is HARD to come by in Colorado. I'd take every piece I could get into my truck. I'd split it, stack it and let is sit for a year or two. It'll burn!!

I’ve done this a few times too. I’d ask for forgiveness too but only if I had no prior permission. It looks like locust but I can’t help but wonder if it’s some willow. Grain is pretty wide...suspected it’s a faster grower. Both usually are. If you can go back, go back...?

Known locust from my wood bin. Smaller piece of limb and the bark is not as course as a piece of trunk would be.

Go back and get it! How much decent wood was there? I know you like BIG long logs to scrounge but its locust! Dont make me drive up there.:headbang: Im on a locust kick now! Locust is better than white oak for rot resistance!

None of the branches/twigs/leaves around give any clue? I'm guessing if it's not Locust, either Black Locust or Honey Locust, that it may be a good size Staghorn Sumac.

    Like other are saying... Split a piece...Split a piece...Split a piece...Split a piece...Split a piece

It looks an awful lot like willow, especially the bark. When cut, it's got a lot of water, so, it's not so light. Later, it gets light.
