I got the boiler fire going nicely yesterday. When I kicked on the power- fan didn't go. during trouble shooting it appears the boiler water temperature is not reading, to send power for the fan/damper to activate. When I got the wood loaded, I found four dead birds had come down the stack to die a slow death. Two of them were bluebirds, which especially saddened me. I made a service call, and also asked for a cap to be place on it while they are looking into the control problem. My neighbor has a similar issue. He has a cap, but the screen burns out in a couple years, so while it is decreasing spark emissions, he still has birds coming in and dying. I suppose I will ensure I have a tall enough ladder to replace my screen when it deteriorates. Hate to have unnecessary loss of life.
I feel your pain. Just think of all the road kill you come across. Even worse when you have to drive past a dead animal every day until it rots or the crows make off with it. just keep trying to protect them, that is about all I know to do.
