Saturday morning... started a little bit after 8:30. The Uncle wanted the 4 Silver Maple gone. I told him to rent me a 45 foot lift and I’d get them down. Had my Stihl 034 sporting a 18” bar and my hand echo saw up in the bucket with me. Had a nice ground crew moving and cutting the branches once the hit the ground... by lunch time we had most of the trees delimbed. It was beautiful weather... 45-55 F light to no wind for most of the day. Day went pretty much smoothly, except for a few mishaps. The only one that counts is a 25’ drop of my 034 saw... but it was still running after it landed... Bent my aluminum handle a bit and a minor fracture in the plastic handle... The before picture: From the bucket view: One of the trees was nasty... I just cut this one off, had about a 12” deep pocket in that had a wasp come out... so I went about 8 foot below to make another cut... and about 8 of them started to come out... needless to say my saw got shut off and I rotated out of there. Thank goodness it was cool enough that they weren’t flying... All trees were trimmed down at this point... but I couldn’t safely drop this one main beem. It pretty much vertical and location... location... location of the lift I wasn’t happy with a safe drop. So I figured it would go down with the tree. That nasty tree... stump... After knocking it down... it fractured in thirds...
Dropped the remainder of the other two trimmed up trees pretty smoothly... but that big one with untrimmed vertical branch. I waited to the last thing on Saturday. I had my Husky 576XP with my 28” bar. It wasn’t big enough to go all the through. So had to work off both side. My buddy was working the wedges... and almost couldn’t have asked for a better drop... I don’t drop a whole lot, this was by far the biggest that wasn’t strapped. The Good Lord was lookin’ over me since it fell right where I wanted it too... it was a nice loud smack as it the ground. Here’s a picture as it stood. Here’s it on the ground... Sunday was clean up day... I had all three big saw ready to go... bars of 25” - 28” - 32” My 034 and it’s poor handle. I was making a back cut and some how the falling block caught the bar.... and I wasn’t going to fight it 25’ in the air... parts can be replaced.... This morning cutting field.... fun times... love running my big saws... My buddy was having fun with my 576xp... Moving the big blocks... the JD earned its keep this weekend... The uncle wanted his home built merry go round relocated... JD to the rescue...
Nice looking work sir! You always did wanna get up in the world? One important question...who gets the wood? I had thought of trying doing bucket work. Did/do you have experience with it? Good thing about the saw surviving and the wasp encounter! Couldve been worse!
This is the third time I’ve done it. I can’t climb... this too me is the best way to get them taken care of... I enjoy it... I’ve got at least two more friends I’ll be doing the same thing with. Yes, thank goodness it was cool enough that the wasp wasn’t moving very fast... I’m taking most of the wood, the FIL’s friend gets the smaller limbs... ought to make some darn easy splitting... I’m guessing...
Great work Chvymn99 That tree that busted up was in pretty bad shape it seems. You mentioned the "falling block" caught the bar of the saw, what exactly is a falling block? Never heard the term before. As another aside, I've always heard it as felling, but many members refer to it as falling. Is there a specifically correct term?
Great work and I'm sure you enjoyed yourself! Too bad about the saw, but everyone's safe, not even a wasp sting. On to the next one soon?
This was just a 5’ block that was up in the air... and when the block of wood rolled off the main branch, the hinge portion caught it just right... hopefully that explains my terminology better...
Both are up to timing... nothing in need of immediate action. Heck I was suppose to have done this the weekend before Memorial Day Weekend... it was raining that weekend, then it got hot.... but this weekend you couldn’t have asked for better weather...
Great work Chvymn99. Tree's on the ground, no humans injured. That's a good day. Looks like the 034 survived pretty well for a 25' drop. I see the wedges on the bucking cuts. I use mine a lot for bucking up rounds.
Ahh, the section you were dropping at that point? I thought it might be something (tool) to aid in the felling. Got distracted by a phone call mid-post.
ROFL. Yesterday I was picking up my work shop and I found a rubber mallet on the floor behind some boxes, and immediately thought of you.
Great, impressive work. Now I’m carrying a lot of envy. I don’t want to boast or anything, but I’m sort of a wasp whisperer. I work among them outdoors regularly, and rarely get stung. But I did run into a particularly ornery wasp when I was moving a ladder near a nest. It got my forearm twice in quick succession both of which felt very much like what I would imagine 220 V contact must be like. Memorable stuff.
