I was looking into it again, looks like the EAB is advancing through Iowa at a pretty good clip. It's now in a couple towns in my old stomping grounds and the quarantine is statewide. They are also urging us not to move firewood across county lines, which seems pretty arbitrary to me-- I can freely move wood from the southernmost town in my county--65 miles away, but I can't move it 8 miles from the next town over.
What a pizzer, I wonder how many are following the transporting of firewood rules, sounds like it does not spread that fast by natural means.
If this is truly how far apart the infestations are in NY state then they are certainly getting assistance in spreading. I'm about 30 miles from the ones at the lower right in NY and 50 miles to the ones that were found in NJ.
I've heard they are here. I have not had any trees dying on my property yet. At least that I have seen. I did not find any in the Ash I cut this past winter. And what a winter it was. It will be sad if they kill all my Ash trees. And the Ash around here. There are a lot of them on our property and in the area. But I have come to the conclusion that they will. But, I will cut them for firewood and something will grow back in their place.
http://www.emeraldashborer.info/files/MultiState_EABpos.pdf This also shows areas of Canada that have the EAB.
Just under the blue line that cuts NYS in half, we have them, in northern NY we'll get them from Canada.
Thanks woodlands. Yes. We burn our cow poop here. We put it in a press, shape it like logs, and presto. Then let it dry. The smell of liquid fertilizer ain't chit.
That map looks more like a systematic attack map.Lots of beetle kill out here.A few years ago loggers removed a bunch of beetle kill up behind my place, hauled them out log length.Stopped the owner/foreman and asked if he didn't have to debark them first, heck in canada they have to be chipped and covered to haul.He told me no such regulations in montana, hauled all those loads down the highway!
Spread either by moving wood or by natural movement, they go pretty fast either way. I recall when we started reading about them in SE MI. Then they put on a big 'cut em down and burn em up' around Saginaw. We're about 30-35 miles from there and found we had them the same year they got to Saginaw. That was in 2002 if my memory is right.
We have been busy cutting Ash trees down in the Des Moines area. Some town house associations only planted Ash trees. We are cutting down trees before they die. Dangerous and costly to cut a infected tree. The branches get very brittle once dead. Doug
The DNR is now asking campers to burn all of their firewood before heading back out of the woods. I guess they presume campers would be taking it home? Why not encourage them to leave it for other campers?
Excellent point! I fear people have lost their common sense with this. The radios are all saying to cut down all of your trees when the guy from ISU is saying wait and treat as needed. My wife was reporting on it and was talking to the guy after the meeting and she said that he was very frustrated because no one was listening to what he was actually saying.
