We have a 24" 2 stage snow blower that if I checked correctly is 2007 model year. It has been the bain of my existence since we purchased it. Every year turns into an adventure of ridiculous proportions trying to get that old tucuseh going again.... Last year I rebuilt it for the 2nd time and it actually runs decent for the first time in its life. ( Not a joke ) So we have been looking at a new snowblower to replace it BUT now it wants to run decent. The question now is can I put a bigger tire on it? I see a lot of 15 and 16" tires an they are aggressive. It makes them look like there would actually be traction. Is a snow auger kit for the impeller gap worth the trouble? 4.10 *6 is the current size and slow is actually VERY slow so a larger tire wouldn't be bad I never use 1st or 2nd gear anyways and we want better traction. As of right now it has virtually no traction even though I put good winter tires on a few years ago. Ive also tried chains and they didn't do much. I am guessing the larger tire would mean harder on the belts and motor to try and move snow faster? Would this be correct?
It should be faster with bigger tires, but the speedometer will be off If you go too big on the tires, you could throw off the the angle of the chute, unless you can change the shoe angle.
If you go with bigger tires make sure you adjust the front skids down so the auger shoot is not grabbing the ground. Oop probably the same thing he said^^^
the impeller mods do help - never bought a kit - just used pieces from worn out single stage units . Flippin Egas is the bain of every small engine that sits for long periods between use- ethanol attacks everything in the fuel system one way or another either directly or by hydroscopic action ( oxidation of metal parts) as e gas evaporates it leaves behind a film that plugs tiny carb passages, rubber and plastics either turn to mush ( rubber) or become hard and brittle leading to cracking or eats pin holes through carb pump membranes. Thanks EPA.
I hate egas too I won’t run it in my outdoor equipment. I always drain what’s left in the tank and run the carb dry before I put everything away for the season too. The main issue is that dang motor... I have never needed a new carb ( although I did clean it once ) but it has needed new rings, valves, valve springs, valve clips, bearings twice, shaft key I don’t know how many times now, coil, starter gear and spring the primer bulb at least three times and pull cord spring 2 times and Probably more I’ve forgotten... I’ll never buy anything tecumseh again that motor is a pile of junk. I can get parts very cheap through a friend and that’s the ONLY reason I’ve kept it so long. The rest of my equipment runs great but that motor man what junk. The odd thing is when it’s running good it starts better than any other engine I’ve got one pull and away. This time rather than oem parts from my friend I bought a Chinese kit and rebuilt it and I believe it’s fixed because it’s never fired after setting all summer not one time until now... I’ve had to fix it every year since we bought it to get it going again.... This year one pull and away it went and sounded good too!
Tecumseh's claim to fame was their inherently great starting prowess. I've been told by ex Briggs and Stratton engineers/ employees and mechanics that Briggs bought and killed Tecumseh partly because of how well they started. E gas.. eh, it's not bothered me much in my experience.
How big of a tire could I fit on a 4.10 *6? 13*4-6 ? 13*5*6? Both available on amazon in the x pattern as well as standard tread. Im not sure how to convert for a larger tire on the rim.
If you increase your forward speed will it keep up discharging the snow without starting to ride up on top of it ? The snow can be so wet and heavy here that I've never used high speed. I have an old tecumseh powered blower and the carb is weird. I used it several years always dragging out the electric cord to start it before I tried it by hand on a whim and realized it really didn't need an electric start at all.
I’m not really sure honestly but I am going to cut up some old mud flaps and make impeller extensions. We watched a couple videos about that today and it appears its like adding a turbo charger to the blower so maybe? We ordered two 13” tires, both belts ( drive and impeller), tire chains, primer bulb and shear pins and it all came to $110 on amazon shipped prime. For that price I guess we can fail in style if it doesn’t work If it doesn’t work there’s plenty of other equipment here I can use the tires on so it’s not a total loss.
Mine is really old and weighs a ton. It's a bear to turn around 180 at the end of the driveway. I swear a cruise ship could use it as an anchor. Lately I've gotten lazy and use the tractor even though that always leaves me with some lawn repair.
Can you post pic's when your done. I'm very curios. I have more used mud flaps at work than I know what to do with.
I will do that. I think all I am doing is making a rubber piece to bolt on the impeller that closes the gap to the sidewall of the shoot. My guess is that they leave a small gap ours is about 1/2" because of tolerances at the factory. ( not small in my book ) I doubt they can get all the models the exact same because of the welds involved. The modification I've seen done is a copy of some high end models that come with the rubber already to close the gap so it is being done on some models just to home owner versions. I even saw a 3 stage cub cadet at Home Depot with rubber on the impeller a few weeks ago that's what got me thinking about it.
I watched a couple video's on the u tube. I'm gonna steal your idea and try it also. My blower is buried in the back of the shed so it will have to wait a few weeks. I figure maybe a couple of bucks for self tappers. I have rubber and plastic mud flaps at work. I'm more excited about it not clogging up verse throwing farther.
Same here I don’t care about distance except when it’s wet snow. The clogging drives me nuts! Yesterday I cleaned the shed so I could get the blower out and that was a BIG project but it’s organized really well now! We couldn’t even get in to the shed it was so bad. Needless to say a LOT of trash is gone.... Snowblowers in pieces at the moment going hog wild on it before snow flies oils, grease ect...
not a good sign- almost a month early for sticking snow. Looks like I might not be in my shop much this week. I do not like driving US 41 ( 40 miles worth) in this kind of weather- to many areas of it turn to black ice combined with the usual assortment of less than adequate ability drivers. Plus there are 2 areas of several miles where it is one lane ( why the H they started construction in the middle of Oct. is any one's guess). Propane tank is full, standby genny ( lp powered) is ok and a cord or so of fire wood in the basement.
I looked on my lunch break. 1-3 in Chicago and 3-5 in Madison. I'm in the middle of the 2 so we shall see. I'm certainly not wanting it yet. I guess the leaves in my yard can wait till next year.
