I have a 12 by 6 foot trailer. Only an old single axle former landscape trailer. I have hauled quite a bit in it. The pic posted was a load I got about an hour from me a few years back. 20180228_133150.jpg Its a bit uncomfortable pulling a load like that from a distance. My nerves get the best of me. Always worried something will go wrong. Had some guts with this load. Had to get it off that property by 3pm that day.

That roadside score I inquired about hopefully will still be there by the time the property owner gets back to the contractor who is building the house. I have to check back in a few days.

I will cut my own whenever I find it, have done plenty of times....I am trying to get to the 3 year plan, but other things get in the way. I have an almost 2 year plan on my property now.

Hardwoods are rare enough out here that I'd consider driving up to 100 miles one-way if someone offered a cord of hardwood for a couple hundred. Farther if it was free! Standard price for a hardwood cord around here is $500-600 on the very rare occasion one appears.

I love that part of PA. Scranton is a really cool town IMO. Plus you've got the poconos right up the road.

On a side note, is the banshee in downtown scranton still open? I think that is one of the coolest taverns I've ever been in.

I've thought of this very thing as a potential big source; however, I wonder what is in it for the farmer? My dad was a farmer/rancher with lots of fences and the trees on the fenceline... I guess we could surmise that they are a liability could one could fall across the fence and knock it down so cows get out. Did you find them amenable to letting you cut? For free? What promises did you make? TIA.

thats a REAL nice load! Did you CS on site? If you can get a load(s) like that then traveling on occasion would be okay. I guess i take for granted that wood is close by.

Right now there is soo mucb maple available within 20 minutes I could spend days just loading, driving, unloading repeat. My tiny trailer only holds about 1/2 cord. But I got in good with a couple of tree services. The one helps load, the other usually doesn't call until they're about done with job and only leaves me big rounds.

Free load of maple I scrounged today. Tree company and they helped load. I could spend the whole day just running between there and home. But dont have the time or room to process that much... yesterday I picked up another load of maple I could have loaded trailer 4 times yesterday. Life gets in way of splitting addiction. They were both less than 20 minutes away

I think we have similar size trailers. It’s a 4x6 with high sides. The most I can get in mine is a half cord too. If it was split it would be closer to 3/4, but that never happens. The small trailer definitely makes long distance travel less appealing.

    Mines a 6×8
My trailer is a 6×8 but it I made it out of an old pop up camper so its got a very low gvw. It can hold 3/4 cord in volume but unless its dry I don't trust the weight . There's been more than once I was scared I was to lose the axle because its overloaded.

Biggest benefit is keeping the shade from encroaching on cropland. Over time the trees hang over & shade the fields. Low limbs hit tractor cabs & break windows etc. I will usually offer to sign a liability waiver if they're concerned. Biggest thing is showing respect for crops & property, removing dead trees before they fall into a tillable area, or immediately if they do. After word got around a bit I have access to over 1200 acres to cut on. One guy wants a text message if I'm coming to his place, otherwise it's just show up & cut.I try to do the bean & corn fields in winter to avoid the crops. Hay we can get on right after it's been mowed. I'll usually drive the lanes & headlands on a regular basis to look for deadfall & get it out of the way asap. One less thing for the farmer to worry about. Nice arrangement. I just need more help to keep up.
