Yeah that's definitely maple, but different than our red maple we have here in the upper Midwest, as well as out in New England.

I went to the edge of the swamp to try to get some red maple leaf pics but the wind the other day stripped the trees rather well.
The leaf shape and colors can vary, even on the same tree.
yellow leaf stuck to a maple tree trunk:

orange: (this one looks a little bit more like
    Canadian border VT example)
    IMG_1402.JPG

    red
    IMG_1405.JPG

tried to find whole leafs of mottled yellow and red but they were all badly torn up, bug eaten and fungus spoiled

The redder leaves tend to be on drier ground or on trees that don't have their roots in the swamp. At least this year.
I wouldn't go as far as saying that's a general rule for color.

One thing I did notice with most of the maple trees now bare is I have more sassafrass trees in the swamp than I thought.

Have you checked all of the filters and oil level? Ours had that issue last year when my neighbor was using it (we co-own the splitter). I think he said he replaced some filters and it has run like a top ever since.

I've not checked it yet. I just tried it as I was walking by it. I usually try to start and run it for 20 or 30 minutes every couple of weeks. I plan to look at it tomorrow.

Got it all stacked and covered for next year. I figure it is about 3/4 of a cord. Let the drying process begin...

That's definitely a red maple, Marvin....and the leaf actually does have 5 lobes, two of them are "soft", arrows pointing to them in the pic.....

Great firewood, that's all I've been burning here so far this shoulder season.....

Thanks Scotty Overkill and everyone else who provided input here. Hopefully soon I can get the top of the tree cleaned up. That should put me at a little over a cord for next year. I've never burned any red maple so I'm looking forward to it.

Definitely not poplar, i just cut one down. Do you burn poplar? They were telling me a couple weeks ago to leave it in rounds separate from everything else so the bark rots and falls off. Is it worth the time and effort to just split the bark off as your splitting it

It's got the pretty good BTU but you don't want to be downwind of your wood stove outside when you're burning it. It smells like dusty, moldy dirt when it is burning. It's not a pleasant odor like, say, pine or cherry.
    It's always something.

I do whatever it takes to get rid of the bark. Do you have too? No, not really. I just noticed one year how long moisture sits under poplar bark. A LONG TIME!! Wood drys ultra fast without it and no worries.
Let em sit in the round for awhile and the bark will loosen up. I’ve split it off when I knew I needed the wood sooner than later.

just in case you have a hard time and the normal things don’t work. Had the same issue twice. After a whole lot of head scratching it turned out there was a small metal gas line running into the carb off the normal rubber. Whatever this metal is doesn’t like oxygen. Store the splitter with no gas or even just turn the gas off for an extended period and it oxidizes solid inside.
I keep gas in the tank and never shut it off now. Havent had that problem since.

I've yet to come across Poplar, so I cant answer that question. One thing Ive started doing on almost all trees is to pop off as much of the sapwood with the splitter, and toss that in the fire pit, or shoulder pile. No need to deal with pulling off bark as its separating later, and it will dry quicker. You also end up with a stack of all higher BTU heartwood.

I was at my friends future house location Saturday to cut some more wood. I filled the trailer up Saturday as much as the tires would take. It was a mix of some more red maple, ash and some oak.

    20191027_113519.jpg 20191027_113531.jpg

Today I'm loading up the truck to take a smaller load home since I didnt get the trailer load all split and stacked yet. Just was curious about a wood i.d. I was thinking some kind of oak at first glance but it doesnt split near as nice as oak usually does. All of these trees were still alive when they came down though. Does that make a difference in how it will split?
