Really no experience building stuff like this. Sure am making mistakes along the way but it’s getting there. This will be replacing a 20’ Shelter Logic shed. The tarp lasted pretty long I have to say. I put 2 cheap horror freight tarps over top after the snow ripped it and just didn’t feel like spending the money on a new cover. Ledger board up. Couple posts up. 2 2x6 through bolted. Store didn’t have 8” so I had to get 10”, that’s the only reason they’re so long.
A friend “in the know” drew up some basic plans for me to follow. Using 2x6 every 12”. Might have to watch the real deep snow on it. Worked in the rain all day today. Really sucks doin it in that. Feel free to criticize. Like I said, I have very little new construction experience. I’ve replaced shingles, put metal roof on, deck work etc but never new construction. All joist up. Purlins next. I found a guy on CL a while back that sold me 20 sheets of 27”w steel roof 16’ long for $300, brand new. That’s what kicked this project into gear.
1) you should of removed the siding so it could be attached flat and solid to the wall 2) then flashed under the siding above onto the new roof to prevent water intrusion, rot, freeze thaw damage 3) header 2x8 when 8' on center, rule of thumb 1" of header for 1' of span 4) seeing the height on the garage you definitely had room put slope to allow drainage even 2/12 would of been helpful 5) wet snow can be 20# per cubic foot keep an eye on it 6) guessing 288 sq ft 5-6k of snow, failure point ledger board at garage all of this is best/worst case, you will likely never have an issue.
Thanks. Honestly, this was 2 weekends worth. All good to know. Wish I knew earlier... Definitely will be cautious with snow accumulation. I'm going to make some sort of long reach rake to help snow slide off. I'm already accustomed to it with the tarp of the Shelter Logic. We had to go out several times in intervals to knock snow off to prevent rips. Can't believe that thing lasted as long as it did! PIA going out late at night, setting an alarm etc.
I'd lag the hell out of the ledger board. Or through-bolt it also. 1 or 2 3/8 bolts per stud Gotta have 2) 2x12 carriers here minimum, sometimes 3. So I'm not really familiar with lesser snow load areas
I'll give it another look and see if I can add any. I have these joist ties to add yet, then purlins and I can get the metal up. I should have enough metal to do the roof, side and back.
Agree with ironpony and huskihl ...Only thing I would add is maybe you could have used longer thru bolts!! LOL
Looks good from my window Jason. Not to rain on your wood pile but does your township have any building codes? I would hate to see you have to tear stuff apart because of some dumb rule. See ya Saturday.
can always add posts on garage side as well and can always add a post between the other posts im like the others about the ledger
Could always add another ledger board under the existing as insurance...and lag into the studs...and I'd stagger the joints between the top and bottom board too...
I’ve been considering this very thing. Progress stopped for the moment. There was a gtg today that I really wanted to go to. All day tomorrow is calling for rain, so I put tarp over the joist until I can get help to finish purlins and metal. Also need to cut the joist at the ends. Roofing is 16’ 1.5” long so I planned to keep them as long as possible.
Expected a rain out today but the weather turned out to be awesome after about 11:30, so I got after it. Got all but one row of purlins down. Ran out of wood. Joist ends cut And ties in. The guy that sold me the metal emails saying he has 2 sheets left after his project. Going to get them tomorrow. Hope to get the roof on Tues.
This thread has me thinking (again) of adding a 8'x 35' lean-to on the back of the garage...not that I need it...but one can never have too much storage space under roof... and I was thinking of pouring a pad back there anyways...might as well do the roof first. Went out and measured/rough calculated materials needed...might wait and see if the huge window crates that my brother says he can get for free actually come through...he said there are (4) pine 2"x6"x10' in each one!
That wood really cut down on costs. I'm way over budget but can't stop now! I need to buy treated fascia boards for the end of the joist, another row of furring strips, flashing and I'll at the least have a roof up. After that I want to stack my wood pile higher in an attempt to hide my progress from sight. Looking at this new found area I'm getting excited. It's a lot more than I had with the Shelter Logic. The frame for it is sitting in the yard and I can't help but think of a way to use it to cover my stacks. My parents have one just like it and they are ready to tear it down, so I'll have 2 20' frames.
So this is the before pic from 2014. I leveled the area with RR ties and back filled with crush and run stone. I kept it a distance from the garage to allow for snow accumulation, so all that space caught junk wood and was essentially wasted.
I wouldn't trim the ends, the steel will take the short overhang just fine, and the further out you can push the drips the better
