My buddy wanted a project for his new welding toy. So he made me these wood racks and I filled them last week. For me, it’s an upgrade of how much I have accessible right out on my deck. The wood is ready too! Burn on FHC! Winter is coming.
Here in WA that can range from a cord to 10, depending on the house really. I’m currently not burning in a wood stove or insert at this time. Preparing for it though. I burned one year in my old house and burned cord and a half or so. The discussion about dry wood being too dry is a tough one. Not if you dry your wood on a natural way. Outdoor moisture equilibrium sets in so usually if wood is dried that way, no need to worry. Kiln dried however can be an issue as it generates a smoking off gasses during start up that can overwhelm a stove and heats up quite quickly. Air control is your friend here but it’s not recommended to fill a stove with kiln dried lumber though.
Of course. That amount will depend on the weather/temperatures we are experiencing. That’s great that you’re prepping. You reap what you sow. Prep hard and smart and you will enjoy longer, hotter burns. It sounds like you know that already so I’m preaching to the choir. I season my firewood outdoors, uncovered, and usually bark down (don’t tell my father). I will cover what I have in my queue on my deck. That’s interesting about the kiln dried stuff. I didn’t think people kiln dry firewood. Seems like a waste to me but that’s just my opinion. I thought kilns were more for lumber. Good to know. Thanks FatBoy85
You bet. Only time they kiln dry it is when you see that big bag of splits or chunks at a sports warehouse and you see the bbq/smoker section. They get oak and pecan or the like shipped and have to kiln dry it beforehand so it’s approved for the travel. Firewood hauling past state lines is frowned upon so that’s the only way to prevent some kind of invasive species from spreading but not all the way. I’m unaware of anyone who has done this but if there’s interest in wood that doesn’t grow around and you wanted to burn it, I think it either has to be made into lumber and kiln dried or split and KD. Just a precaution.
