I was checking the neighborhood on Asplundh's cutting and a lot of the older stuff had been grabbed. Even the big stuff i left behind. One yard i had posted pics 9/21 of a mound of logs. I didnt feel like messing with the big tangle of behemoth logs. It has been slowly diminishing. I drove by and discovered this elderly gentleman working the score. I stopped and talked with him a few minutes. Turns out he is 80 years old, and hoarding wood the "buZZsaw" way. Just a saw, noodling and sledge and wedge. Had a Fiskars X25 too. His saw was a Stihl 025 with 16" bar. I had to admire the guy. His friend was coming by with a PU later to get the wood. Is this me in 30 years??? Second pic i posted in a thread. Same pile of logs. Asplundh giveth, buZZsaw taketh away!
Nah... Your hat would still be on backwards.. Gotta give it to him. Lesson taught - stay active if you are active.
Thanks MikeInMa you got me LOL!!! and clapping at the laptop! Made my night! Another reason i love this forum...for all the laughter it has brought me!
I hope I live till I’m 80. damm, I guess hoarding makes us live longer? That pic is awesome. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
The book “ Norwegian Wood” describes the “ wood age” which is how gathering wood is an older man’s game. The older a man is the more likely he’ll be making wood. Younger men in 20’s were found to be pretty indifferent to it. The book is a fantastic read by the way.
Reminds me of my hoarding acquaintance Marcel at the dump, he's 84. His father was a local lumberjack in the pre-chainsaw era. Marcel gets it done with a battery powered saw and an electric splitter.
What a classic picture...........Hope am around and physically able enough to even swing a maul at 80.
I'm still wondering why a hoarder would pass on a load of wood like those pics! That's gold! Still hoarding at 80 years. I dunno . I better get a bit smarter lifting those heavy rounds. I always had the attitude that the wood hoarding would taper off a bit when the children fly the coup. But I'm seeing that might not be the case.
Hats off to that man! More power to him. The half empty personality asks, if he has kids or grandkids, why aren't their behinds helping?
I love my kids & grandkids to death, but cutting/processing wood makes for good "quiet" time. Don't always enjoy company lol.
Most hoarders around here like park and grab wood...my old way. When found it was a tangled mound (see the second pic) rather hastily cut (as Asplundh wood usually is) and i had several other felled trunks in the area to choose from. I guess its easier to buck a log and put it on the truck rather than wrestle one with the peavey, quarter and load. Plus i knocked twice and no answer. I found out yesterday the its a boarding house for the university across the street. I prefer to get the okay with homeowner prior to using the saw. Im tempted to take the 460 with the 28" bar and buck the rest for him.
That's badass! I did once cut up a ~28" log with my 20" bar, so I also aspire to be as hardy as that good ol' hoarder at that age. Hats of to him!
Ive been using it with the 28" and it seems to be the "keep on" bar. Cutting lots of 20" plus rounds the last few weeks.
Thankfully the trees I grab are almost never that large, though I am absolutely sure my reliable 30 year-old Toyota could handle it!
I bet that guy could tell me a thing or two about wood. All ears. You don’t do that for a majority of your life and not know tricks. I can also tell he’s doing that carefully so he can still do it later. That’s the trick too, take care of yourself so you can do it when you’re his age and beyond.
I seldom would take wood larger than 18-20" as all i had was a 16" bar on my 290. All i ever cut with was a 16" bar. Two years ago started a lot of larger diameter trees/wood being available to me. I swear it was a sign from the wood gods LOL. February last year i got the 460 powerhead, a few bucks into it and i can easily work large wood.
