Yep, I’ve been battling these things all summer, just when I thought I these damm things flew south one flew out of the stove when I was cleaning the black double wall in the house... My plan, put a spark arrestor around the cap, but am worried it’ll clog up... what do you guys do for these issues? Surely some of you have battled these things like I have. -Nate
How difficult is it to climb on your roof to get to your chimney? Put a spark arrestor on until you start burning 24/7. When that time comes take it off for the winter. Birds wont go in there while a fire is burning. In the spring when you're done burning place it back on the chimney. Problem solved. As far as clogging goes burning dry wood will minimize this issue. I have a cap with a screen on my chimney. My wood last year was less than ideal but I had no real serious issues with it clogging up. However I certainly kept a watchful eye on it. If it started to gather some crud on it I would run the stove a hot for a bit and the extra heat and draft seemed to clean it. You have to be proactive about it and not let it get to bad though. I guess it depends upon whether or not you could see it from the ground and how easily you could get to it if a problem arose.
I like your thinking and it’s a good idea but it’s not easy at all to get to. I had to borrow and build a scaffold to install my liner and double wall. Could build the scaffold back up but I would have to borrow it again from the friend. And he is currently using it to slowly roof his rental house. Ugh.
Chipmunks too. Jeez. It’s funny they didn’t bother with my chimney till June or July then went away. Then came back with a vengeance in September.
