That wast last Sunday. He never called. Dunno if he meant last or this weekend. It wouldve involved my making a plywood box around the ladder racks so they could shoot the chips into it. Basically an F150 chip truck. Move the chips and dump in the same property based on what the guy told me. We never discussed what i'd get paid. After watching how "hard" they worked, id say forget it. Although honestly it seems like easy money. I prefer working with someone with my own work ethic. Probably why i work alone most of the time.
Went this afternoon and cut another load of oak. Quick load less than an hour and a half. Only big rounds quartered filled the truck fast, plus imminent rain. Biggest round of the three trees. I unloaded, went back quartered and loaded the remaining cut rounds. Rain started and i finished loading bucked wood. Went and unloaded in the rain. Wouldve liked to bucked these shorts to fill the truck, but will finish tomorrow. So 4 1/2 loads for the three trees so far.
Easy enough...just prop some plywood against the ladder rack and when they start blowing chips in that will hold the plywood in place...I see people do this often...and as far as pay, IMO it doesn't really matter if you can get "in" with these guys and maybe get future scores out of it...
Oak that straight and knot free is a breeze with Isocore and/or Fiskars. The stump cut off i noodled 3/4 then split. Couple gnarlies i noodled.
Grabbed the last load today. All random length smaller diameter logs. Took longer to cut and load these than the big trunks. It didnt quite fill the PU and i wanted to have a full load. Three houses down they felled a white oak and another hoarder was cutting the smalls. I stopped and chatted with him. He leaves and i cut a few to top off the load. A lady happened to come out and i asked about the wood and permission to cut. She says yes so up went my "keeping wood" sign. The trunk is inside her picket fence. Dont know if my customer will want more. Quite a pile already. 261 went solo today 5 1/2 truck loads so 2 1/2+ cords. Probably another truck full if he wants the other tree. Asplundh was no where in sight today. I texted one of the guys and they were en route to Portland, Maine. Paying time and a half for that he said. Dont know what cutting they have to do yet. Didnt check for tree tags anywhere. Nor'easter changed their plans.
Asplundh was MIA for a few days after the Nor'easter couple weeks ago, but theyre back at it. Ive driven by a small pile of Norway maple logs which had slowly declined to just a couple big logs. I decided to buck and take them. Nothing much as i wanted to try out my new sharpening job on the 261. Zipped through it. I halved and loaded. Had to run an errand and en route i pass some red maple lengths. Guy in the yard raking. "First come first served, gets it" he says. I was going to grab it tomorrow, but wouldnt have been able to sleep knowing it was waiting for me. Guess where i went on the way back...straight there. Didnt even bother bucking the lengths (36-48") and they were small enough to load just like the old days of scrounging when i wouldnt use the saw. Ah, just like old times! "Fond" memories for my back! Flip flopped the bigger ones. Not like my bucked loads but maybe third of a cord
They took down this huge oak last week. Good leaner toward the street and wires. Ive been saying for several years it should come down. Driven by wood a few times and no one had grabbed any of the smalls. No sign either. Im driving by late yesterday afternoon and see a lady in the yard. I yell out asking about the wood. She says cut the big stuff. Stopped again today and lady tells me to take all i want. They had taken some of the smalls and didnt realize how much work wood is. I chuckled to myself. I was going to cut some but drizzle was too heavy and i have to bring it to my friends 15 minutes away. Ill try for a load tomorrow. Should i leave a sign? Gotta be close to a cord. Ill start with trunk. Well over 24"
That doesn't look like it's going anywhere in a hurry. Even if it was cut into rounds they would weigh too much to lift. If there was another guy around with the right tools and skills to dice that up, I think you would have run into him already.
