She was fond of Baileys...and bacon. Not at the same time though.

went to the score yesterday afternoon and cut another load. The 261 cut almost everything including an 18" oak log. Couldnt get pics yesterday as camera was malfunctioning. GF fixed it this morning. Used cell phone but cant get pics from it to PC. I hate technology!
This load half oak and half bitternut hickory. Only a pile of nuggets remains. I am tempted to change my "keeping wood" sign to a "free wood" sign. IMG_1041.JPG IMG_1040.JPG

Finished hauling this score and they are still cutting nearby. This haul is one and two driveways from the bitternut hickory I scored earlier this week. All red oak. Been debating about taking the oak, but when i halved them easily with the Fiskars it quickly convinced me to take it. I drove by the first driveway late yesterday and a guy was grabbing all the loadable chunks even in the rain. Part of my ego made me take the oak. IMG_1085.JPG
The sections left after i cut. Maybe 24"+ trunk. Too big for most other scroungers and i can go back with the 460 if i feel up to it. IMG_1084.JPG
one log was hollow with ants. I dropped several of them in the road to get em out. This one maybe six times and each time lots of ants. It was a virtual ant pinata! IMG_1086.JPG
The second tree. What i left. 20" largest diameter. Both are on an embankment so i doubt others will grab them. IMG_1087.JPG
    Half cord load.

We'd have to cut and load. You use your farm tractor usually to load your logs correct? A winch would work well for lengths like these. jo191145 has a nice set up for lengths.

Brad, I can't recall if I have asked... if wood is on the right of way, do you just assume it is ok to take it or do you need to ask landowners?

Wondered this too. Sometimes it is along the road edge (within 5') up here and a free for all. Other times it can be clearly on their property. I haven't grabbed some because it was dropped and scattered beyond a few feet from the road.

If they post a "keeping wood" sign i keep going. My normal M.O. is to knock on the door and ask if its farther in from the road Yawner and Jotuller . Especially if i need to use the saw.
Today for instance, i stopped and looked at some wood next to someones driveway in a bit from road. It was on a dangerous blind curve so i wanted to load in their driveway. Went and knocked on the door. Lady answers and says i could take it but after closer inspection it was a bit too gnarly for me. 1/4 cord cherry. I still could go back if i wanted. Second location was on the state highway right up from our driveway. Wood in yard and other side of fence. Few pieces next to curb. Car in driveway so i went and knocked. No answer. Im ready to leave and lady comes out. Left my number and she had to check with husband. No call yet. This case red oak maybe three PU fulls of primo wood. Nice long trunks. I probably couldve loaded and she wouldnt have come out, but i prefer to be respectful. Both seemed to insist that Asplundh was taking it and i explained their procedure, they will...eventually but dont want it.
The wood i cut yesterday and today i didnt ask. Steep driveway and wood on an embankment, plus good size and "tangled". I went by late Wednesday and there's a guy loading all the smalls while it was raining. I doubt he asked. I was cutting there today. Had partly blocked the driveway and someone came home. I quickly moved for them and they didnt say a thing. I have a white truck, wear a "high visibility" yellow safety T shirt so they mustve thought i was part of the crew that was working up the street. Either way i cut a nice load again today.
If its close to the curb, then a free for all it is.

hit the oak again today. Went to where i cut yesterday. Took the 460 and bucked the big oak trunk. First pic when i started today. IMG_1086.JPG
Bucked all the logs and rolled to the street to split. Minor panic attack...i forgot log blaster & Fiskars. Luckily home was a mile away. IMG_1093.JPG
Couldnt understand the orange chunks in the sawdust and realized i sliced through their marker tag. IMG_1089.JPG
Decent size. Split pretty easy and only one knotty log IMG_1090.JPG
Must be some BIG chunks(s) of metal in there based on stump and cut off. IMG_1092.JPG
Left the stump cut off and first log. Didnt feel like hitting metal. Id like to try metal detecting, but not with my chain saw! IMG_1091.JPG
Almost filled the truck with this cutting. Backed up to the other tree and cut enough to fill the bed. Notice my new "buddies" working up the street. IMG_1094.JPG IMG_1096.JPG
460 cut the entire load. 261 was along for the ride.
